Is wifi upload speed limited ?

Using the "Speedtest" app., I show a download speed of 9000kb/ but the upload speed seems limited at 261kb/s, even though a speedtest on my pc shows 9000 kbs and 450 kbs upload.

Is 261kbs the limit of the iPhone's upload wifi capability ?

PC, Windows XP Pro

This is a difficult question to answer because network performance is only as good as the weakest link. If you are testing the speed between you and your ISP's server you will get a totally different result when compared to testing the speed between you and a Server located somewhere in the Cloud. You can think of it this way you can have the fastest processor knobbled by an under specified HDD, Router, Modem, or any other component which may not be fit for the purpose for which it was intended. There are many other issues like whether you have QoS enabled on the router that is giving priority to the available bandwidth for example Voice gets priority over say a Telnet session. Also your ISP might have a throttle built into your plan in other words different speeds at different times of the day. Other issues if you are ADSL/2 is the distance you are from the exchange the further away you are the slower will be your performance. They may claim performance at 20Mps but in reality because of conditions of the cable distance number of users subscribed you might be archiving considerably less than that. Having said that you can have the best of everything simply pulled down by the performance of a component out there in the cloud. Some of us are simply satisfied if it works 24/7 Ant..

Thanks for your reply.

I checked the app "Checkmy Tubes" as you suggested but it only shows the Download speed, which I have no problem with. I use the apple app "Speedtest" which shows both Download and Upload speeds and it is using this that I show my Upload speed as only 260kbs, as opposed to the 500kbs i get with my pc on the same network (Virgin cable, 10Mb/s plan)

So why does my pc show 500kbs and my iphone only 261 kbs, tested at the same time of day? Maybe its the speedtest app ??

If you have a friend with an iPhone might be an idea to get him to test your network speed. Have you tried switching QoS on the Router off? I am assuming that the Desktop is 802.11/g as is the iPhone? or if the Desktop is running 802.11/n it could account for a speed difference. Have you tested the speed at say Macdonalds? or some other free access point for comparison purposes. You might also power down everthing on your network so only the iPhone is using the bandwidth and see what you get. It is an interesting issue and would be interested in what you determine as being the issue. Ant..

Yes both are g series. I can't access the router as Virgin have changed the default password to prevent customers 'tinkering'.

I have a friend also with a 3GS visiting this weekend and will try the app on that. Will also try other wifi spots.

Did you try the "Speedtest" app on yours? and if so what did you get?

Has anybody achieved higher than 270kbs UPLOAD speed on thier iPhones, mine is v3.1,

You can defeat Virgin by resetting the Router back to factory settings. The reset button is usually on the back of the Router accessed through a small hole using a glider clip or something similar. Its a push button switch.

WARNING NOT A GOOD IDEA TO RESET THE ROUTER IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP OF THE CURRENT SETTINGS OR TOTALLY FAMILAR WITH HOW IT IS SETUP.

On my Router [DLink] the factory settings for the Logon was UserID 'Admin' and Password simply the Enter Key [no password].

If am surprised that Virgin have intentionally locked you out of the Router. Ant..

Yes I have the manual for the router, Netgear WGR614 v9, and have tried before to access it and tried the factory reset et al with no joy.

But this particular problem I don't think is router based, other laptops when used on my network record upload speeds of 450 kbs, so why only 260 kbs for the iPhone ?

Someone else must have the "Speedtest" free app, I just wondered if anyone is getting better than 260 kbs UPLOAD speed on their iPhone 3GS.
