Is Perian safe ?

Hi,

I'm interested in installing perian, but is it safe to install codecs with quick time, does it affect somehow the system ?

MacBook Pro 15inch 2,8Ghz 4GB DDR3 500GB HD Nvidia 9400GT + 9600GT 512mo, Mac OS X (10.6)
