snow leopard won't load

I have a late 2006 intel macbook that came with tiger. I upgraded to leopard ( currently at 10.5.8.). I bought the $29 snow leopard upgrade and it will not load. It spins and stops about 3 times and then ejects itself. I recently also noticed that if i try to boot from my original OS X install disk the same
exact thing happens. Any ideas?

It sounds like your DVD drive might be having problems. Will it read commercial disks?

You triggered a thought. After I read your response I realized that when I put in a couple commercial disls to check the drive I put in cds. The macbook OS install disk and the Snow Leopard disks I believe are DVDs. I just tried to play a commercial DVD and it is not working. Looks like DVDs playing are the specific problem. Did you ever hear of this before?

If the disk will work in your other Mac, then you could try to use [firewire target disk mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] in installing. Be sure your Macs satisfy the criteria in the link.

Yes, the DVD part of the drive can fail and the CD part still work. Some folks have had success by using an optical drive cleaning kit.

I have a different problem. When I try to download SL on my MacBook, it tells me I can't use my Macbook Hard drive, because this disk is being used to do "Time Machine Back Up". In fact, I'm not using this disk for back-ups; I use and external one. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Frank,

I've got the exact same issue with my 1st Gen 15" MacBook Pro. Spins a few times, then self-ejects. Although, when I pop in a movie DVD, it will load fine. Go figure...
