    Thanks to everyone for your help, particularly Harmen Utrecht for the clear instructions. I did exactly as suggested and it solved my problem. The same large file (about 75MB) kept reappearing and caused my Mail to freeze repeatedly.

     

    My heart stopped when my mail also disappeared from my folders (as UKvsUS had experienced) but, to my huge relief, it reappeared a few minutes later.

     

    Thanks for the help! I think it's terrible that this has been a problem with Mail for a few years and has not been addressed by the Apple team.

    This worked like a champ.  BTW i signed on to thank you guys for this thread. My issue initially was not receiving emails.  I could send tho.  Then i noticed the Recovered Email folder with the same 32meg file duplicated 3K times.  I deleted the .OfflineCache folder contents and I am back in business.  Thank goodness this thread still exists.

    I sent a 19MB PSD file, unaware that it could exceed the addressee's limit.

    The undelivered message was repeatedly (every few minutes) added to my Mail Recovered Messages Folder!

    I tried to follow the complicated advice of others, found in other postings, but too difficult for me.

     

    However, your solution was simple, and worked first go.

    I didn't even need to restart my Mac.

     

    I just deleted the account in Mail Preferences, closed Mail, re-opened Mail, entered my password to restore the account, deleted Recovered Messages, and all was back to normal.

    When you delete a user account, you will be asked to choose from three options for what to do with the user's folder.  Which option did you choose?  The first puts the user folder inside a disk image file (double-click it to open it) found in /Users/Deleted Users.  The second leaves the user folder where it was, in /Users.  The third deletes the user folder.

     

    If you chose the third option, you can only reliably recover from backups.  If you don't have backups, see Recovering deleted files.

    Peter: your steps list was nice and clear and helped significantly in curing my problem.

    Running OS 10.6.8  (Snow Leopard).  A large attachment (accidently inserted) in an AOL e-mail caused the recurring "Recovered Message" Problem.

    Following your steps:

    1. Opened Mail and went to Mail Preferences

    2. Selected the Account that was having the problem (in this case an AOL mail account)

    3. Wrote down all info for that account.

    4. Selected "-" to delete Account, Clicked "Remove" on pop-up.

    5. To be safe: closed and then reopened Mail.

    6. Went to Mail Preferences and selected "+" to add an account.

    7. Added the Account that had been deleted, the system guides you through the necessary info.

    8. Checked the info for the Account from the info I'd written down -  all ok.

    9 Closed Mail Preferences.

     

    The Account appreared in the Mail Inbox list and now seems to be working fine.
