Pentax DSmobile 600 with Image Capture only sayd "No paper loaded..."

I was using Paperless to scan documents, but Paperless is not fully working on Snow Leopard yet. I re-installed the Pentax DSmobile 600 TWAIN driver tonight, but I still cannot scan documents into my Mac.

If I select "Flatbed" as the Scan Mode, I can get it to "Overview" a document quite nicely. But when I tried to scan it it doesn't go well. When I use "Document Feeder" as the Scan Mode, Image Capture just sits there saying "No paper loaded..."

A workaround is to "Hide Details" at which point it seems to start allowing me to scan again.

Is this a bug with Image Capture?

To reproduce:
* Open Image Capture
* Choose Show Details
* Select "Flatbed" as the scan mode
* Select "Document Feeder" as the scan mode
* "No paper loaded..." displays on the screen, Scan button disabled.
* Click "Hide Details" and you can Scan again.

After my Snow Leopard installation, I am able to scan with the Pentax DSMobile 600 with one major issue. I cannot calibrate the scanner, as I could with OS X 10.5 and therefore, the scans, while there, come out with colored lines basically so thick that the scan is obscured (even with using black and white scanning mode). So, yes to scans with the downloaded driver from the Pentax site, but no to calibration. The calibration is what really makes the scanner functional, and I have lost that function . . so also am stuck (even with the 10.6.1 upgrade.

I downloaded the 1.0 version of Paperless a couple of days ago.

My scanner doesn't have TWAIN support I guess because if that is selected in the preferences the app just hangs. I use "Image Capture" without selecting anything else. I must have scanned 100 pages today without a problem.

The only issue I have with Paperless is the known problem with invoking Adobe to view the doc. It causes the app to crash. I hope Mariner comes up with a new update for Snow Leopard soon.

Did you ever find a way to calibrate the Pentax scanner?

I got in contact with Pentax/Brother about the DSmobile and they said:
{quote}Unfortunately, there is now way to calibrate the scanner via Image
Capture on Snow Leopard. Not sure why, but Apple has disabled this
feature with the release of Snow Leopard. We are potentially going to
release a solution for calibrating on Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure
when this may happen. For now, you should be able to calibrate the
scanner using a 30 day trial version of this software:

Just got my DSmobile 600 this afternoon. I'm disappointed.

Basically, I'm seeing the same problem described above: "no paper loaded" in Image Capture. Scan button grayed out.

I've downloaded and Paperless and I can use the scanner now. I'm not thrilled with Paperless's UI but at least it gets the job done. I've looked at other scanner software (VueScan, ExactScan) out there but haven't found anything that I really like yet. I just want something that scans the document then opens a standard Mac OS X "save" dialog...any ideas?

Does anyone happen to know if there are other SW packages that enable calibration of this scanner? I've already tried (and let expire) Paperless and currently have a brand new but useless dsmobile 600 sitting on my desk - which I ironically chose over other models because of the recommendation by Mariner software for this:

from http://www.marinersoftware.com/sitepage.php?page=152:
{quote}"Nearly any scanner will work with Paperless through the Image Capture method, however we strongly recommend using a TWAIN compliant scanner or Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M, Fujitsu ScanSnap S300M or Pentax DS mobile 600. We have found that Fujitsu and Pentax have the best drivers on the market at this time; your results may vary using any other scanner. "{quote}

Answering my own question:

I downloaded Paperless and installed it on my wife's MacBook, then used her computer to calibrate my new dsmobile 600.

After that, a quick search of files modified "today" turned up a calibration file called "Calibration.dat" located in:

HD > Library > Application Support > Brother > DSmobile600

After copying this file to the same location on my MacBook Pro, I can now scan using the dsmobile 600 (I'm scanning using Ironic Software's Yep http://www.ironicsoftware.com/yep/; haven't tried it with other apps).

I am able to scan using the DSmobile 600 and Image Capture. Oddly, though, it only works when I select Flatbed as the Scan Mode. If you do an Overview (preview) scan, you'll need to feed the item through again to do the actual scan.

You might try downloading the latest driver from the Brother website:

Hello Granite Apple
Could you do me a big favor. I lost my calibration sheet, I remember it was black and white and had some horizontal black stripes of different width on it.
Could you either measure me this sheet and tell me where the stripes are, or scan it and send it to my personal email which is zsoltmag@gmail.com.
Sorry for this post, but I have no idea where to find this sheet again.
Thanks a lot

hey everyone.

I contacted brother and was able to get in touch with a VERY helpful individual who was able to supply me with the latest driver even though brother officially has stopped support of the Mac OS.

If someone can lend a hand with an FTP site I would be more than happy to offer the file that was supplied to me. I do not want to post the actual link to the file as I do not want to cause any problems for the tech support that possibly did something he wasnt supposed to.

Thanks!
Dave

That link saved the day so thanks - now I gotta ask why the heck after an hour on the Brothers website AND the Apple website the only way I 'find' the driver is by someone like Barbara posting it ? Again thanks.

And yes I did the full on browsing on both sites regarding the possibility of a Snow Leopard driver update etc ... nada.
