Soundsticks bug!!!

Since installing SnowLeopard my original USB connected Harmon Kardon soundsticks will not stay selected as my sound output device on reboots. The SL 6.1 update has not fixed this.

After each reboot I have to go to the System Prefs and select them as the my preferred output device.
Unfortunately, Apple have chosen not to include a link to the Sound prefs in the Menu bar as they do with Displays, Airport and Bluetooth, so having the option of a Volume control in the menu bar is no help.
With all of the updates recently its giving me the heeby jeebies.
Other wise SL is great.

HI Richard,

Before you install software updates, read the documention. That way if you have a software/hardware issue, you'll know if a fix was included.

Here are the 10.6.1 update articles.

Try deleting this file and see if the sound is better.

com.apple.soundpref.plist

/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

Hi to all of the above.
Carolyn, sound quality is not the problem. It is that the sound output source is changed from SoundSticks to Internal on each re boot and that this was a bug introduced by Snow Leopard that did not exist in Leopard or Tiger. Deleting the soundpref.plist makes no difference, however thank you for your contribution. I do read the documentation!!

Jonathan, I know of the rogue amoeba sound source freeby, but my contribution to this forum was to point out a bug introduced by Snow Leopard in the hope that Apple would fix it as the SoundSticks were originally purchased as an Apple peripheral.

Asphotos Glad someone knows what I am talking about, thanks for the tip, but as you realise this should not be necessary. And reinforces my point about not having that link more obvious.
And another little bug shows up now, right clicking will not show this menu, only using the option key. I thought that all contextual menus were available with either a right click or or a left click and the option key.
Thanks to all.

I have a related, but different bug with my SoundSticks! Instead of them being deselected for Output on restart, they stay selected, but stop working! Very odd... After anywhere from a few hours to a day or more, I can no longer hear anything through them. Odder still, iTunes won't even play a track; the little speaker icon will appear next to a track I attempt to play, but the progress bar doesn't move off of 0:00! I've found that the only thing that solves the problem is if I uplug/replug their USB cable from the back of the monitor where it's plugged in, and they will resume working.

Richard, your other "little bug" is not a bug at all, but simply a more and more common way for Apple to provide more elaborate functionality. Try option-clicking on all the menubar icons at the right end; many of them will give very detailed info. And usually, a right-click on something like that doesn't do anything different than a normal (left) click. Unfortunately, there no longer are any consistent "rules" for what types of modifier-key-clicks will lead to specific kinds of behavior. I'm not really sure there ever were, either...

Let's hope someone chimes in with some other ideas, or that Apple figures it out in the next release!

Good luck!
John

P.S. As will all things like this, don't hesitate to post feedback here:

I have a thought about what could be causing this issue, but it depends on the answer to this question:

How do you have the SoundSticks' USB connector attached to your computer?

If you have them hooked up to anything other than one of your computer's built-in USB ports, I'm thinking that could cause the issue (including my tangential issue)...

So, please chime in with your particulars, and then try switching your setup around to see if it might fix the problem, if relevant in your case. I'll be curious to hear the results...

Richard I fixed it.

I deleted the com.apple.soundpref.plist from the MAIN LIBRARY -PREFERENCES - (not the users library).

Again in the same PREFERENCES folder I went into the AUDIO folder and deleted com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

Reselected SoundSticks

Restarted my machine

And PRESTO!!!! works like a dream.

Hope it works for you too.

Great tip - this worked for me and it also brought back the startup Bong. I had noticed when pursuing the missing Bong issue that my Internal speakers were muted automatically every time I used the system and unless I turned off muting manually there were no system sound effects and no startup Bong upon next startup. After executing the plist tip, I noticed an additional "Play sound effect through:" drop down choice that I had forgotten historically has been there - that is "Selected sound output device", (there was only Internal Speakers or SoundSticks) - - - This has been missing and it returned after the plist delete. . . . Using the Selected Output Device fixed the auto mute issue. . .
