Final Cut Pro HD - MPEG2

Hello -- I am curious if mpeg2 comes in with the Final Cut Pro HD Software? Because when I go to File export, quicktime conversion, pull down quicktime and mpeg2 is not listed. I check with another person with the same program, they have that listed. Was this a plug in added or some how not installed?

Shane --

If I use compressor, I get error message saying that the file exist or media is busy. I tried changing the file name and tried to locate the file, problems still exist. I am not sure if I am looking in the right place or not.

Theres been times where it works fine but most of the time it says file exist.
Just trying to finish this video onto DVD because it is the only best quality for DVD.

Shane --

Does it specifically have to be a certain quicktime format? If the video contains Livetype graphics -- without pixelating and distorting the image when export onto a DVD. Some of the quicktime format has made the pixelation and make still images bounce when playing the DVD.

So if I convert the movie to quicktime and then import it to Compressor, will the quality remain the same as if just exporting it via compressor itself?

Thanks!

The way to export it from your timeline without any further compression (before you compress it) is to export as a Quicktime Movie, self contained, using the sequence settings. If your sequence is DV, then your titles suffer the DV 5:1 native compression. If you have LOTS of titles, or just want yours to look good, then what you'll have to do is drop the sequence into an 8-bit uncompressed timeline, add the titles, render, THEN export a Quicktime Movie.

Shane,

Thanks for getting back to me, It was just puzzling experience when I was trying to get help from a friend that had MPEG-2 converter. So yeah I will give the export to quicktime a shot and bring it into compressor. Basically this sequence has Livetype title and credit. This sequence also contain audio and still images (more of a slide show). The images are digital and scanned pictures. The project is a in the year review type video. Just to give you an idea what I am working on.

Thanks!

Is there any advantage to putting DVCAM footage into a sequence with no QT compression? I normally set the sequence QT compression to DV/DVCPRO NTSC. I understand that that's the setting for footage shot on DVCAM and captured via DV. I then output the final as a QT self-contained using sequence settings. I then import the QT movies into DVDSPRO 4 and output at 2-pass VBR and burn to DVD with TOast at 1X speed.

I'm trying to get the best quality output possible on DVD, using DVCAM footage captured via FW off a Sony DSR30. Maybe I need to switch to uncompressed capture?

The Mpeg2 option in FCP is only available if you have installed DVD Studio 3 or below. If you are using anything newer, then they assume that you will use Compressor. But Compressor has problems exporting to 2 Pass VBR if you have done an Upgrade Install of FCP and Compressor, because of some incompatibility with compressor 1 presets. The exported video looks like crap, there were quite a few post on the Compressor site if you want to verify.

I gave up using compressor, it was too much of a hassle, the QT Mpeg2 Component is much simpler and gives you pretty good quality Mpeg2 movies. You could just have your friend email it to you and then you just need to put it in the correct place (which I don't remember at the moment, but when your friend finds his, make sure that he writes down the path).

So, if you don't want to master Compressor or deal with the configuration issues associated with it at the moment, just find a way to get a hold of the QT Mpeg2 Component.

Good Luck

Do you think there would be any harm in bring over the MPEG 2 component from DVDSP3, placing it in the correct quicktime component folder and using it in FCP HD (5)?

I have FCP Studio and have noticed that using compressor 2.x is much slower than exporting an MPEG2 using quicktime conversion from FCP HD 4.5

40 Min DVCPRO HD show fast encode = 10 hours, compressor 2.2
40 Min DVCPRO HDshow fast encode = 1.5 hours, QT conversion in FCP HD 4.5

If I do what I suggest above, perhaps the option to export MPEG 2 from FCP HD 5 would be available ('cause it isn't an option in FCP HD 5)

Compressor is treachorously slow. Quicktime doesn't seem to work the same depending on the application, which doesn't make sense.

Your thoughts.
