There are black lines suddenly showing up in the middle of my iPhone (2G) screen two days ago, and they grow horizontally in portrait view since then. I went to Apple retail store, the guy at the Genius Bar said the iPhone can only be replaced if under warranty or upgraded to a new phone with a two year AT&T contract. I asked him what caused this problem, and he said only the engineers may know. My iPhone is already a replacement (received 5 months from original purchase because the on-off button failed to work) and now showing a problem in less than a year (i.e., out of warranty). After reading the posts to this discussion, I wonder how good is the quality control over the production of iPhones and whether it is worthwhile to get a new iPhone 3G.

This just happened to me. My phone is still under the extended Apple warranty, but I was really holding out for the new phones in June 2010. Has your issue been resolved?
Ok well this just happened to ME as well 2 weeks ago! Unfortunately my phone is almost 2 years old so there is not warranty, but why is this happening due to no fault of ours!?? APPLE SHOULD fix the problem or replace our phone!
The iphone has a one year warranty, meaning that it is guaranteed against defect for one year.
The period of time that they can guarantee against defect is not limitless, hence the one year warranty.

Hardware can fail - the same with computers. If there is a hardware failure while the iPhone remains under warranty that wasn't caused by accidental damage, the iPhone will be exchanged under warranty. If a hardware failure occurs after the warranty has expired, Apple will not exchange the iPhone at no cost as if the iPhone remains under warranty. A manufacturer's warranty provided with any product has a time limit - the same with automobiles, computers, televisions, cell phones, etc.
I assume these are permanent lines (as in: they are there no matter what app you are using)?
If so, and the glass isn't broken, it's an issue with your display.
A lot of times this can happen from dropping it (I know that's where the lines on my phone came from...dropping it too much...)
Has it sustained (even mild) any physical damage?
If so, Apple does not cover that.
