In New Folder "untitled Folder" not highlighted

Since installing Snow Leopard I have had problems using my desktop the ways I am used to.
When right clicking to make a new folder the "untitled Folder" name is no longer highlighted. I now have to left click twice on it so that I can name it. Previously it would be highlighted and all I would have to do was command V.

If I choose new folder from Menu it will open a new folder highlighted in the correct way. Right mouse clicks will also work properly from that point too, until I type or take focus away from the desktop, from that point the "untitled folder" is no longer highlighted.
If I clear my desktop of application window, the folder again works in the correct way, as soon as I open a window, it breaks again.

Has anyone any ideas what is happening here?

Thanks
Mandy

Other people have reported that this seems to have changed since Snow leopard. I dont see how making another account would change this behavior.

I know that there are other ways to get a new folder but I choose to do it by right mouse click. I will probably change that now this has stated happening.

It seems that the focus is not changed from the window you are in to the desktop, so if in firefox I right click for new folder, yes I get a new folder but the focus no longer changes from firefox to the desktop. If on the desktop and I right click in firefox the focus no longer changes from desktop to firefox.

Previously the focus did change.

My wonderings are......Is this a bug or is this intentional?

Hi from Seattle:

I have this exact same problem here with my Mac pro. It DOES highlight about every 4th or 5th time I right click and choose "new folder" but 80% of the time it doesn't. This isn't intentional else it would be more consistent. It's a bug.

And I know that because on my MacBook Pro, its highlighted every time I choose "new folder" from a right click menu. It seems to be fine on my MacBook Pro but real buggy on my Mac Pro. Both are only 4 months old so that's not the problem. Its a real PAIN to now have to go up to the file menu and choose new folder when we are in the middle of work flows. This slows me down considerably. I have found other bugs as well like in mail's photo browser. We cant just double click on a chosen photo now and have it appear in the email. We need to manually drag it into the mail. We also need to "command click" a group in address book for the entire group to appear in the "to" field during a composed email. We used to just be able to double click on the groups name and...they are all there.

Over all I do enjoy SL but these little bugs (that new users don't even know about) are a bit havoc creating at times. If you find any solution, please write back. And no, 10.6.1 didn't fix this.

I contend that they're not bugs, but indicate problems with your installations and 3rd-party apps. All I can suggest is that you create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If not, then the problem's a conflict or corrupt preference file in the original account. If so, then the issues system-wide and reinstalling SL, repairing permissions, and restarting is in order.

If you want to report this to Apple, either send Feedback or send bug reports and enhancement requests via its Bug Reporter system. To do the latter, join the Apple Developer Connection ( ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

Baltwo:

I don't want to highjack this thread but man, do I EVER stand corrected here. I found your post and went into my teat account. Made numerous new folder's on my desktop in that account and all of them were label-ready highlighted. So I went back into my account, tried it and same as before--ever 4th or 5th one only highlighted. I went into disc utility and repaired my permission's--wala!! Fixed. 40 + new folder;s later and they are all label-ready.

I think I know what I'm talking about a lot (and I even do sometimes) and this happens. I stand completely corrected my friend.

So--To the original poster of this thread, do that and Im sure it will be fixed.

Thanks again Baltwo...... 🙂

Having done some experimentation i have found the following behaviour

If you create a folder on the desktop with finder in focus then you ARE able to name it straight away, however of you create a folder on the desktop with another application in focus you are not.
For instance you are working in Mail Safari or other productivity applications such Word Photoshop FCP etc.....

The way to do it is to firstly click on the visible desktop area to bring finder into focus then right click to create the new folder and name it .

The essence is MAKING FINDER the FRONT running application and this is a change from earlier OSx behaviours (It may well be a BUG !) because previously the focus automatically followed the mouse and now doesn't in 10.6.

Hmmm!. Focus never followed the mouse unless you clicked into a new area owned by another app/window. You always had to click to change the focus. If moving the cursor changed focus, you'd go nuts as things would be jumping all over the place.

That's a different thing; right-clicking (CONTROL-clicking for single-button mice users) switching focus to the Finder when other apps have the focus and not what you originally posted about. I suspect that switching focus to the Finder in earlier OSs was an error, since that destroys the use of contextual menus in the apps with focus in those earlier OSs.

Well, it seems that everyone is right, It is all about focus!

I too found through trial and error and some help from another forum that if the desktop/finder was in focus then the hight ready title bar would be correct but if you just clicked on the desktop with a right click new folder the highlight would not be there.
This also works in reverse....if you are working on the desktop and right click in say a safari or firefox window you will get the contectual menu but finder will still be in focus.
I know that before snow leaopard you didnt have to bring finder into focus before producing a new properly highlighted new folder on the desktop and nothing else was messed up otherwise people would have noticed.
I surmise that this is something that has been implemented purposefully and is probably not a bug. That is a shame as I really liked the way it was before.

Thanks for everyones help in problem solving for me.
