Charts crash numbers

Hi all,
I am on 10.6.1 and Numbers (08, 1.0.3) crash every time I try to add a chart, open an existing file with a chart or start a template with a chart in it.
Charts work just fine in Keynote and Pages, so it's not an graphics issue.
Any ideas please?

ALWAYS the same advices:

check if it strikes every documents or only one
repair permissions
disable the Numbers preferences which may be corrupted
test the way it behaves from an other user account.

Thanks,
1. It's all documents with charts including the supplied templates...
2. Permissions are up to scratch (repaired just now for testing)
3. Isolated ALL .plist files including the word "numbers" (found all "hidden and system files")
4. Charts work JUST FINE on a different login.

The logic would say that it is something in the user settings, not the app itsel

Exact.

The apps preferences files are:

< startupVolume >:Users:< your account >:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
< startupVolume >:Users:< your account >:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
< startupVolume >:Users:< your account >:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist

If disabling them (drag them on the desktop when the apps are closed) is not sufficient, it will be difficult to isolate the wrongdoer among the tousands of files of an user account.

These are the files I have isolated, and eventualy deleted, and still no joy...

Now I am faced with two options:
1. Reinstall iWork, which shouldn't be a drag, but I find it hsrd to believe it will fix the issue, as the glitch must be sitting somewhere in my Library.
2. Dump my account and use another - this means ALL the new settings for ALL the apps - major pain.

As I am on a brand new computer and have migrated the user settings from a backup, (backup was 10.5.6, new computer 10.6.1 - that MUST be the problem) I am wondering if re-installing Snow Leopard may be an option.

Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

cheers

If iWork behaves well from an other user account, reinstalling it will change nothing.

My guess is that reinstalling the operating system will not repair the wrong file in the user account.

It's not really difficult to move preferences files from an account to an other one.

Right, so I'm getting this too. I wouldn't have thought of "charts" but I have a large-ish spreadsheet with charts on some sheets and only when I opened those ones did Numbers '08 crash. A spreadsheet without charts seems fine.

I moved the Numbers plist files to the desktop, with no improvement.

Will have a look a Permissions, but this must be a bug with Snow Leopard... done, and there was a permissions repair ("private/etc/postfix/main.cf.default"), a simple "repair" (same file), and two "Warnings":

SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

And the same message for:

"System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resou rces/Locum".

I haven't used this particular file in month so older versions have scrolled off Time Machine ... most frustrating.

Am using the latest version of Numbers '08.

Wasn't planning on upgrading to '09, but will have to do so???

An interesting thing is that I can see the file data including the charts in Quick View ... just can't open the actual data.

So, far, none of this is helping, although I haven't rebooted yet (lots of work going on!).

Thanks for whatever help anyone can offer.

Sorry, I should have posted my "solution" to the described problem.
Before moving to a new account I used the Migration Assistant to pull my old user data from a Carbon Copy Cloner (that itself was an interesting discovery that the Assistant recognised CCC clone and allowed to restore a 10.5.6 user from the clone).
Everything went well (sort of) and Numbers returned to their former glory - everything is working fine.
The only issue with the Migration Assistant/CCC combo was that I had a "CLONE" folder in the /volumes/ and had to delete it manually.

Your statement that it's a SL bug seems incorrect, there's something in the user library which makes Numbers misbehave.

Certainly not.
A bug in the system would strike in every user account !

Often, when there is an important upgrade, Apple changes some permissions for security reasons.
In this case, Disk Utility is a bit 'fooled' and reports oddities which aren't real ones.

I haven't used this particular file in month so older versions have scrolled off Time Machine ... most frustrating.

One more time an example of the fact that Time Machine is not a good backup soluce.

Am using the latest version of Numbers '08.

Wasn't planning on upgrading to '09, but will have to do so???

Not required.
Here Numbers '08 behaves well under 10.6.1
As a buck is a buck, given the fact that we are in September, I would not upgrade to iWork'09 now.
I would wait january 2010 as it's the habitual upgrading month.

An interesting thing is that I can see the file data including the charts in Quick View ... just can't open the actual data.

When a doc open in an account but doesn't in an other one,
(1) the doc is not corrupted
(2) the problem is linked to files of the account not files shared by evey accounts.

Such corrupted files may be
(1) preferences ones but you tried to remove them
(2) fonts available in the account's fonts folder:
<startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Fonts:
(3) cache files which may be hidden

This is because culprits may be hidden files that a maintenance tool like Cocktail may be useful.

(2) Download the trial version of Cocktail for Snow Leopard from:

http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php

Run it to:

• Rebuild Launch Services database
• Update locate and whatis databases
• Clear system caches, component caches, Directory Service caches, dynamic link editor's (dyld) shared cache, kernel caches, user caches, ColorSync caches, Dock caches, Java caches, QuickTime caches and font caches (including font caches created by applications from Adobe, Microsoft and Quark)
• Clear trojan horses and worms such as Astht (AplS.Saprilt, Hovdy), Inqtana, iServices, Leap (CME-4, Oomp), RSPlug (Jahlav), Lamzev, PokerStealer or other malwares that may harm your system in any way.
• Clear CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) job files, core files, virtual memory swap files and other temporary files
• Clear Internet caches, cookies, download lists, form values, history files and page icons created by Safari, Camino, Firefox, OmniWeb, Opera and Shiira web browsers
• Search for corrupted preference files
• Clear log files (manually or automatically rotate and/or remove archived copies of log files)

Merci, Yvan,

I appreciate all of your information.

As of this afternoon, having rebooted the entire system ... it's working properly again!

(It always seems to be me that a thing like Cocktail should not be necessary - isn't that why we went with Apple? It's like Registry Cleaners for Windows ... why doesn't Windows look after that itself?)

I've had some problems in the past which made me wonder if combinatons of some 3rd-party software was interfering with the OS. I'm running VMWare Fusion and Adobe Photoshop, two big programs which are not made by Apple. In the past, I have completely failed to either Skype or ooVoo. It seems ... just seems ... that trying to run these programs simultaneously has been the culprit. I had a big crash once - I mean two days recovering-from-a-crash kind of crash - after installing Firefox. It appears that iTunes may be involved in that somehow as well.

Anyway, all of my evidence for that is soft, but I wonder sometimes if that's one reason why some people have trouble which most other people do not.

I'll probably have a look at Cocktail anyway, but in the meantime - for now - all is well!

Thanks again.

Charles

You are free to play with matches but here is an old ape's tip.

When you are not sure of an application's behavior, don't install it in the main Applications folder but create an account, mine is named "for_tests" and install the beast in the account's Applications folder.
Doing that, it will strike only in this "for_tests" account and the main one will remain clean.

Merci, Vieux Singe(?),

Well. Would never have thought of that on my own. Would require a little fiddling to access files back and forth between accounts, but doable.

In the meantime, have had Numbers files with charts crash again, and now after a reboot (because Adobe Photoshop [latest version] was getting unstable), and whether due to the reboot or not, a Numbers file with charts seems stable again.

So, I'm hesitant to move VMWare Fusion, because it resists having itself "adjusted", although it can be done. I can't really move iTunes. That leaves Adobe Photoshop, as an example of a large, non-Apple-written program which I suspect of causing inter-3rd-application trouble. I could also try Skype again in my "test" login.

Thanks for that interesting idea.

The question mark wasn't needed.

An old ape is really a 'vieux singe'.

I'm unable to help upon Photoshop (which I didn't got because I don't accept to pay in France twice the price asked in the USA) and I don't use VMWare Fusion because I live well without Windows applications.

Thanks again,

I'm finally getting back to this. I already have several accounts, so I checked on one of the other ones and all of the 3rd-party software in my primary account Applications folder is also in the secondary account's Applications folder.

I've searched Apple help to no avail so far.

When I install software, how do I restrict it to just one account?
