Anyone else having trouble making phone calls after the 3.1 update? I keep trying to make a call and it says calling but nothing happens. The only way I can get a call to go through is to turn off phone and restart it. But even turning the phone off has become weird as half way through the shut down process it starts flashing the main screen with the clock and my background pic (not the home screen). Also after charging my battery it shows only half charged until I restart the phone. Once restarted everything seems to work fine... for awhile, then I'm back to the same issue.

    Try an iPhone reset.

If no change after that, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.

If no change, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. (If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup, restoring from the backup will also restore the problem.)

Same thing here. Can't receive phone calls or txt messages either once the phone seems to lose the carrier signal. I've tried the Airplane Mode trick and that makes the problem even worse... the phone then doesn't respond to clicking on a phone number in my contacts list or trying to dial out with the keypad.

I have the same problem. If the phone stays on for a few hours, it will not accept incoming calls, will not make outgoing call. Same with data transfer - it will not work in or out. The only way I can get the phone to work again is by rebooting it.
This is not the first time I run into the problem and AT&T support is clues as usual.

I have exactly the same problem. After 3.1 upgrade, 75-90% of all incoming calls going straight to VM, even when showing full bars and I'm sitting watching my phone. Outbound calls just "hang", with "calling".

I finally turned off "3G" in settings (reverts to "E" network), and now calls are working again. Apparently 3.1 "broke" 3G connection to ATT network.

Personally, I want a refund for my monthly service that includes 3G. We should all ask for refunds of our monthly service. Don't they even TEST this before the put the new code out there?

No such problem here, and I haven't seen this reported here in any significant numbers - few and far between.

Since you think that Apple does no testing whatsoever, you won't be getting any refund for your monthly service from AT&T since AT&T has nothing to do with it and especially just for not having 3G network access. There are 3G and 3GS owners who don't live in an area where AT&T has 3G network access, and they survive as do many users who still use a first generation Phone which isn't a 3G phone. And you'll survive also until this gets resolved one way or another.

If no change after these steps, call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

Had the same problem. A reset wont help, sim card wont help and full restore wont help. Dont do a full restore take it to an apple store if you have one and let them run diagnostics on it. I got mine replaced b/c of this issue, since getting the new one I have not upgraded to 3.1. I have the 3Gs model just FYI.

I too am having the same issue with my iPhone 3G. Worked fine until the 3.1 upgrade. Now, I'm rebooting every couple of hours in order to send and receive calls and texts. I also have the weird shutdown problem with the home screen showing briefly before it shuts down. I've not tried turning off 3G yet, will see if that helps. Hope this gets solved quick. I also upgraded to iTunes 9 when I did the 3.1 upgrade to the iPhone. iTunes 9 broke my connectivity to my Apple TV, maybe it messed up the 3.1 load to the phone?

I am having troubles making and recieving calls after 3.1. I have to do a reboot every so often and then I will recieve the texts, voicemails and call information that did not come through. Additionally my signal strength has gone in the dumpster...lucky to get edge where I have normally have 3G. Overall update has screwed it up and slowed it down...so I'm frustrated once again by buggy software updates! This is my only phone so this is not acceptable.

Same thing here. Happening on my 3G and my wife's 3G as well.

Turning it off and on doesn't even help anymore. Is there a way to go back to 3.0?

A reset is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.

we have all tried it doesn't work

    "We" have all tried what?

Is your name Kreskin? Can you read minds and bend spoons? If not, how on earth do you know if everyone who has posted in this thread has tried the troubleshooting steps I've provided with no change?

No one in this thread has provided anything they have done except for powering their iPhone off and on with no change.

And no one I have replied to in this thread has responded that restoring their iPhone with iTunes from their iPhone's backup or restoring their iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from their iPhone's backup has not resolved it.

Folks, I have had this with 3.01. It is random, but it does happen more often than I would like.
  • jdw2536 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
Alan, Your posts in this thread went from unhelpful to obnoxious.

You've apparently not followed where other folks have attested to trying the airplane mode trick and turning off 3G: "No one in this thread has provided anything they have done except for powering their iPhone off and on with no change."

You've acknowledged that you haven't experienced the problem and been dismissive of anyone having the problem: "No such problem here, and I haven't seen this reported here in any significant numbers - few and far between."

Then despite not experiencing the problem and so not possibly knowing the solution, you've repeatedly posted an extremely time intensive guess at a solution which I will attest now does not solve the problem.

Even if your repeated suggestion had worked, looking for a solution other than spending several hours restoring and re-synching, restoring and resynching isn't at all unreasonable. But since your definition of unreasonable includes expecting production software to be bug free or for people to be reimbursed for services for which they have paid but not received service, then I guess you and I might have a different definition of the term.
