trouble making calls after 3.1 update

Anyone else having trouble making phone calls after the 3.1 update? I keep trying to make a call and it says calling but nothing happens. The only way I can get a call to go through is to turn off phone and restart it. But even turning the phone off has become weird as half way through the shut down process it starts flashing the main screen with the clock and my background pic (not the home screen). Also after charging my battery it shows only half charged until I restart the phone. Once restarted everything seems to work fine... for awhile, then I'm back to the same issue.

Add me to the list of customers with 3.1 problems. We have 2, 1 month old 3gs's that have had consistent network issues since the 3.1 upgrade. We have an appointment with a Mapple store tomorrow. They are replacing both of our phones. They seem to believe that both of our phones became defective at the same time after upgrading to 3.1. What a joke.

Of course Mapple says that we are the only people in the world experiencing this network issue.

I'm telling you, just take the phones back to apple and have them exchange them. If under warranty of course. We did with both of our 16g 3gs's and now both use 3.0.1 and we have ZERO problems. We are both thrilled to no longer be putting up with the BS of have a really expensive phone that doesn't work reliably as a phone.

That and apples silence on the issue, cost them replacing 2 perfect 2 month old phones with new ones. All because they left us with no options. That in my opinion sends a much larger message. When applecare has no choice but to replace your phone because even their genius can't fix it because.

both applecare and the "genius" told us not to update the firmware to 3.1. just leave 3.0.1 on there for now.

They both said millions of iphone users are not having problems with 3.1, but many are so to be safe, just don't update.

so we are not going to.

Just picked up our second set of replacements. So this would make iphone 3gs # 5 & 6. One came pre-installed with 3.0.1 and the other with 3.1. The genius said he had never heard of this thing happening. He was shocked to learn that we have had 4 3gs's have this problem once 3.1 was installed. But applecare told me that this is a known problem and they believe it has to do with the base band (the radio that communicates with the cell towers). He said that all previous version of the OS used the same basic base band, but for 3.1, they rewrote it from the ground up. He speculated that somewhere in that new code has caused problems. Of which it can be solved by turning off 3g. I asked why most users of 3.1 don't have issues he said there must be some sort of hardware glitch or something causing the base band issues to appear.

He said NOT to update our 3.0.1 replacement phone to 3.1, not now at least. He said he personally would wait for the next firmware. He said, as for the replacement phone that came with 3.1 already installed, he said hopefully lucky #5 will work. I must get lucky sooner than later, as most people don't have this issue.

Just got off a call from applecare support. They asked me a bunch of questions, they said they have started to log calls and have a list of questions they are suppose to ask people having this problem. They have been flooded with calls over the last week pertaining to this issue. He said they have an official case open to investigate this issue. This rep said his personal belief is that customers with over 30 apps installed, or maybe a certain combo of apps, is causing the baseband to not wake up after the phone has gone to sleep. So even though the iphone wakes up, you can play games and such, the phone part (baseband) has not actually woken up. It is stuck in sleep mode and won't wake up.

This rep also said, it could be tied to something in the baseband causing a hardware issue in the 1% of phones. He said it is definitely the 3.1 update that is causing the problems. They have 0 reports of anyone having this issue before the 3.1 update. He also said that turning off auto lock is a possible work around. Uninstall not needed apps, turn off 3g, and do a restart as needed.

I'm just glad they are finally admitting there is an issue with 3.1. He said check itunes daily as there probably will be an update very soon.

Same thing here. Can't receive phone calls or txt messages either once the phone seems to lose the carrier signal. I've tried the Airplane Mode trick and that makes the problem even worse... the phone then doesn't respond to clicking on a phone number in my contacts list or trying to dial out with the keypad.

I have the same problem. If the phone stays on for a few hours, it will not accept incoming calls, will not make outgoing call. Same with data transfer - it will not work in or out. The only way I can get the phone to work again is by rebooting it.
This is not the first time I run into the problem and AT&T support is clues as usual.

I have exactly the same problem. After 3.1 upgrade, 75-90% of all incoming calls going straight to VM, even when showing full bars and I'm sitting watching my phone. Outbound calls just "hang", with "calling".

I finally turned off "3G" in settings (reverts to "E" network), and now calls are working again. Apparently 3.1 "broke" 3G connection to ATT network.

Personally, I want a refund for my monthly service that includes 3G. We should all ask for refunds of our monthly service. Don't they even TEST this before the put the new code out there?

No such problem here, and I haven't seen this reported here in any significant numbers - few and far between.

Since you think that Apple does no testing whatsoever, you won't be getting any refund for your monthly service from AT&T since AT&T has nothing to do with it and especially just for not having 3G network access. There are 3G and 3GS owners who don't live in an area where AT&T has 3G network access, and they survive as do many users who still use a first generation Phone which isn't a 3G phone. And you'll survive also until this gets resolved one way or another.

I too am having the same issue with my iPhone 3G. Worked fine until the 3.1 upgrade. Now, I'm rebooting every couple of hours in order to send and receive calls and texts. I also have the weird shutdown problem with the home screen showing briefly before it shuts down. I've not tried turning off 3G yet, will see if that helps. Hope this gets solved quick. I also upgraded to iTunes 9 when I did the 3.1 upgrade to the iPhone. iTunes 9 broke my connectivity to my Apple TV, maybe it messed up the 3.1 load to the phone?

I am having troubles making and recieving calls after 3.1. I have to do a reboot every so often and then I will recieve the texts, voicemails and call information that did not come through. Additionally my signal strength has gone in the dumpster...lucky to get edge where I have normally have 3G. Overall update has screwed it up and slowed it down...so I'm frustrated once again by buggy software updates! This is my only phone so this is not acceptable.

A reset is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.
