Anyone else having troubles with VPN since the 3.1 update? All of a sudden I get an error message about not being able to authenticate. My settings are still the same as before... I can even still connect through VPN from my Mac.
I am having the same problem. It worked fine in the 3.1 beta, but there appear to have been a lot of changes made since the beta and this is one of the two main things that doesn't work anymore, the other being IMAP. I am trying to connect to a Mac OS X Server (10.5.8). Other computers and a co-workers 3.0 iPhone have no trouble connecting, so I suspect it is definitely iPhone 3.1. I might try doing a 'clean' install of 3.1 later, but have little hope that it will actually work. It makes the connection and authenticates, but then it repeats the config request, times out and disconnects. I pasted these lines below from the server logs (brackets removed for formatting).

Same problem here. I know my settings are correct because I can connect via VPN through my Macbook, just not the iPhone on OS 3.1. It used to work on OS 3.01. Apple, fix please?
Same here - I get - vpn server did not respond - vpn still works on everything else I try to connect and I can confmr it has not worked on the iphone 3G since 3.1 upgrade which I now regret as it is totally buggering up my business use of this hardware.
I just have the same experiance, drove me crazy this morning. Now it looks like I cannot downgrade as the new settings are changed for good. You cannot go back. I just did a downgrade from 3.1 to 3.01 and I cannot connect to my VPN.
See the following article for more information. I wish Apple was more forthcoming about this as VPN connections are a critical part of my business! Force me to purchase a 3GS is something I would expect from most other large software companies but not Apple. 😟

I have the same issue but with a 3GS. Definitely something to do with the 3.1 upgrade. Hope Apple has an answer sooner than later or i will change my mind on this test iPhone.
Well, I am still having this problem in 3.1.2. Sometimes I wonder if the problem is with OS X Server 10.5.8 which has also caused some other bugs on top of those it already had in previous versions, but I can't imagine that everyone having this problem is connecting to a VPN on 10.5.8.
Something new I discovered in trying to work around this problem is that I can connect just fine to my server using its internal LAN IP via WiFi, but not using the external IP from any network (including the LAN). Of course, this is a completely pointless discovery since I don't need VPN to connect to the network I am already connected to, but it does raise my curiosity.
Bottom line is that this is a completely ridiculous problem if they want people to consider using it for business and I don't see how it could have been overlooked for four months now when it worked fine before (including the 3.1 beta).
While on 3.0.1 all I had to do get some work done was switch on VPN then fire up Jaadu RDP on my iPhone.
Now on 3.1.2 (clenches fist) I have to VNC into my home computer of which I then open my VPN connection on my home computer, then RDP to the servers.
Perhaps if enough of us report this "bug" then maybe Apple will do something about it. From what I google'd a possible solution is to upgrade the firmware of the VPN router, which is not a option for me since 1) I am not a network administrator and 2) in the past they told me that they (the IT department) will not support the iPhone VPN.
Does anyone else know of a free VPN service that i can try? Cause clearly i cant connect to this, but im guessing if i cant use this i probably wouldnt be able to use any other kind either
