My 160 has always been a little "off". Recently, I got a red circle with a red circle in it icon. Is this really the "kiss of death" I've been reading about. This is a double-whammy for me because my iTunes library dumped out on me and I was only able to salvage about 7800 of 13000 songs. Is it over?
Your buggered mate! Mine has just done the same after skipping a load of tracks. The hard drive is now fooked and looks like there's no option of recovery regardless if your still covered under warrenty.
There seems to be a lot of this happening at the moment...
Thanks. Not what I wanted to hear but sounds like the reality of the situation. I can't believe Apple doesn't have a way to "at least" salvage the hard drive to recover content. I lost almost 13,000 songs, tv shows and movies. Live by technology....die by technology....
I HAVE IPOD CLASSIC 120GB WITH RED CIRCLE AND X, IS THEIR NOTHING I CAN DO TO FIX IT, I DIDNT PURCHASE IT FROM A STORE, SO I DONT THINK I CAN SEND IT IN TO BE FIXED OR REPLACED.
teh apple suport guys will say it's a hard drive failure, which is correct, but the same thing happened to me and i saw this site. it seems crazy, but take the advice here

smack the side of the ipod while holding it hard. do it over fast and over untill you hear a weird sound coming out of it, then it should come back to life. worked for me, saved me 250 bucks, but later my clasic broke down because of the sync failures going on with the classic (if you dont know what i'm talking about, look around the apple discussion site classic page or go here
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151907&tstart=15)
to add to this the hard drive was fine for me afterwords, all my songs were saved (though since i had to restore and lose all the content on the pod for reasons listed above)
Wow! It took a few tries but wolfioligy101's suggestion worked! I have cartoons loaded on 2 iPod Classics to keep my kids occupied on plane trips and one of the iPods was showing the red circle right before a trip. Fortunately, I found this discussion and the link posted by wolfioligy101. I was skeptical but it worked! The iPod plays normally, syncs fine, and doesn't appear to have lost any data.
