iPod Classic 160gb Red circle with Red X

My 160 has always been a little "off". Recently, I got a red circle with a red circle in it icon. Is this really the "kiss of death" I've been reading about. This is a double-whammy for me because my iTunes library dumped out on me and I was only able to salvage about 7800 of 13000 songs. Is it over?

smack the side of the ipod while holding it hard. do it over fast and over untill you hear a weird sound coming out of it, then it should come back to life. worked for me, saved me 250 bucks, but later my clasic broke down because of the sync failures going on with the classic (if you dont know what i'm talking about, look around the apple discussion site classic page or go here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151907&tstart=15)

Wow! It took a few tries but wolfioligy101's suggestion worked! I have cartoons loaded on 2 iPod Classics to keep my kids occupied on plane trips and one of the iPods was showing the red circle right before a trip. Fortunately, I found this discussion and the link posted by wolfioligy101. I was skeptical but it worked! The iPod plays normally, syncs fine, and doesn't appear to have lost any data.

Thanks!
