Jul 13, 2010 11:41 PM in response to tvbinsby Frustrated Integrator,Hi all,
My problem seems to be different to all of you.
We have purchased a mac mini to use as a media system, however this does not have snow leopard installed, the unit is 4 days old and there are multiple issues with it.
We have it connected to a amp via HDMI and then the amp connects to a plasma via HDMI.
we have the network version of eyetv and it works perfectly over the LAN, apart for a few lags, but I suspect these are aerial issues more than transmission over the LAN.
but the main problems are that; front row will not play movies only the sound file from the movie plays and I get a black screen.
if I put a DVD in to the mini mac and open the dvd player app it says "A valid device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"
and if I try to play a movie through iTunes it plays fine if you want to watch it at a tiny screen res but if you dare try to watch it at full screen it jumps and jitters like an crack addict in rehab, not fun.
If anyone "apple included" has found a way of fixing this issue it would be nice to have an expensive unit that is supposed to do what it is advertised to do.
talk about frustrating i have been at this all day and still come up with nothing! -
Jul 14, 2010 2:32 AM in response to davidreed999by Vanderlei Loula1,Disabling the subtitles in subler really makes them show in front row, and for a moment it looked by the answer for now, bur it turns out that doing so prevents it from showing in my iphone and my AppleTV. Back to start point, and keep looking for a solution. -
Aug 4, 2010 11:01 AM in response to ytryby jovm,My front row was working perfectly until a restart earlier today. Ever since, I have had a black screen with just the audio track running on every bit of video content I play in front row - even trailers streaming from the iTunes store. I didn't even try to play anything with subtitles. iTunes displays everything fine and I have been through all the solutions suggested earlier. Trashing prefs and caches, reinstalling qtpro7 and perian, switching screensaver off in front row - no dice. Does anyone have any further suggestions? -
Sep 19, 2010 9:15 AM in response to jovmby keithbahjat,Same problem on my Mac Mini.
I went into System Preferences, opened Perian and clicked "Uninstall Perian"
Then I restarted the Mini and FrontRow displays video again. -
Nov 6, 2010 6:59 PM in response to ytryby Mac-Fly,I just recently had a hard drive failure and since in reinstalling/moving files around (still using Leopard 10.5.8), I found that I too have lost my video in Front Row. That is in only a few video most of the others work fine. Has anyone looked into the *_sorenson video 3 codec_* I found that the videos that use this codec although working fine in QuickTime, in front row those same videos only play the audio.
I wonder is it possible to upgrade the sorenson video 3 codec. -
Jan 6, 2011 1:29 PM in response to ytryby Tranman101,From the Library folder, Trash the Caches folder.
Then in the Preferences folder, Trash the com.apple.FrontRow.plist* file(s).
Restart.
I was having this problem on a new MacMini that already had Snow Leopard installed. This fixed the problem for me. -
Jan 22, 2011 2:43 AM in response to ytryby Turnandshoot,I'm having similar issues too.. First time I tried to use Front Row on my 3 month old Mac and on every DVD it just sticks and stays black. When I try and play the DVD.. "Sorry, an error occurred".

Jan 22, 2011 3:08 AM in response to ytryby Turnandshoot,I sorted mine out - the hint was in my question.
It's the 1st time I tried to use my DVD player so I had to open "DVD player" first.. Set my region.. and then go back to Front Row!
All working fine now! -

This one worked for me as well - thanks for the post. -

hmm... I have the same problem: no video, only audio in front row
None of the solutions worked for me.
Videos play ok in Quicktime player or in iTunes, but in Front row there is no video (audio only). -
May 20, 2011 8:34 PM in response to Maks Zbogarby RoverJosh,Ok, everyone. I had the same problem: no video, only audio in frontrow. However, worked fine in iTunes. I was able to have some success although, I don't know what fixed it.
I bought a brand spanking new MacMini Server: read as "no DVD drive/optical player". So I tried to launch the DVD player to set the region as one of the posts suggested, but it won't run without a player. I just says no capable device found or whatever. In a stroke of genius I reconnected my old Mac Mini and launched it in Target disk mode, which allows it to act as an optical drive for my MacMini Server. I then launched DVD player again and was able to check all the settings. I couldn't find any "region" but after the FBI warnings rolled, DVD player would quit because the "copy write protection could not be verified" or some garbage like that.
I then cleared the Cache folder under both the user library and the main library. I then found the "com.apple.frontrow.plist" file and trashed that as well.
NOTE: I did not empty the trash yet!!! Key...
Then I restarted. I enabled Frontrow and now I have video....
So in conclusion, who knows what fixed mine.....I am emptying the trash now. Lets see if I screwed anything up...Hope not.
Good Luck,
Josh

Jun 10, 2011 12:24 PM in response to RoverJoshby bpr17,This last solution seems interanting, but I have tried the "com.apple.frontrow.plist" and it don't appear. So, when I restart all continue in the same way... I can heard but I can see anything. Any idea? Thanks.

Jun 10, 2011 12:43 PM in response to bpr17by bpr17,Sorry, at least I found the file, com.apple.frontrow.plist, but with some understanding letters at the end. Anyway I deleted all caches and this file but it continue working bad. Like before
