iTunes 9 on Windows 7 x64 Has Problems with iPhone

Hi All,

This is VERY frustrating. I have installed the MS Windows 7 x64 Enterprise Eval (Supposedly the gold copy for eval). I installed iTunes 9 using the 64 bit installer. I can get it to install correctly and play music, so no problems with iTunes as a music player, but try and sync with an iPhone and there are all sorts of problems.

I have done the following:

1) Installed/De-installed iTunes about a million times
2) Put my iPhone on a powered USB hub
3) Plugged my iPhone into a USB hub on my computer

I can get iTunes to recognize my iPhone, but I sometimes get a set of different errors.

Sometimes iTunes won't recognize the iPhone. When I unplug it, Windows tells me that it could not install the "MTP USB Drivers". Don't know why, but that is what it says.

I can plug it in again and iTunes will recognize it, but it says:

iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because of an unknown error occurred (0xE8000065).

If I put my phone in recovery mode, iTunes indicates that the phone needs recovery and starts the process. After a while, it comes up with the unknown error again.

Sometimes it says could not sync with iPhone "".....

I've manually de-installed the Apple drivers and reinstalled. That hasn't worked.

I've run the install and software in Compatability mode for Vista.

I am my wits end.

Anybody out there with ideas? Should I downgrade iTunes? It appears as though version 9 might have some issues.

I have the same problem with the iphone(3G) unable to sync with itunes 9 with windows 7. I'm using an Asus P7P55D.

There's an issue with the usb drivers and the iphone. I don't know the full details, but i'm pretty sure it has to do with the new power saving modes for the P55 boards.

The easiest fix i've found so far is to just buy a pci usb card and sync from there

I tried the PCI USB card.. the system registered it fine, said it was functioning properly, but it didn't recognise anything that I plugged in to it - which is quite annoying.

I don't know if the PCI card is stuffed (bought it from some cheapo computer shop, a VIA based chipset, Bytecc U2410V) or if there's something else I have to do to get the **** thing working.

This issue is so frustrating, as I contacted Gigabyte who told me to talk to Apple, I contacted Apple who told me to talk to Gigabyte. Way to go with the post-sales support, guys.

I'm not certain which of the following has gotten this working for me... and at best it is a work around, but I've been syncing without issues for about a week now. I have:

1. Done a complete restore of the iPhone. (WARNING: Deletes all data.)

2. After first sync error, delete/remove iPodDevices.xml file from the C:\Users[User Name]\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes directory.

3. Dug into the BIOS on my Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 and turned C-State functionality on.

4. Removed Bonjour using the Windows 7 version of the Add/Remove Control Panel (WARNING: Breaks certain iTunes functionality, including Home Sharing, and certain iPhone Apps, such as Docs-to-Go syncing).

5. Close all other programs before plugging in the iPhone to sync.

I'm not sure what above the above has temporarily resolved the problem... but I haven't had an error for a while now. Hopefully Apple will get this matter resolved soon, as I'd like to reinstall Bonjour without risking my iPhone data.

I have an EVGA motherboard (NVIDIA chipset) and have been experiencing problems syncing my 3G iPhone since did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium late last week. Mainly, I get the timeout problem. Deleting the iPodDevices.xml file fixed it for me just now, but I get the sense based on what I am seeing here, this won't be a permanent fix.

I'm posting thing because there were some discussions going on indicating it might be a Gigabyte-specific mobo problem and it isn't...

Here's my issue:

Windows 7 64 Bit
iPhone 3GS with iPhone OS 3.x
iTunes 64 Bit
Installs fine

- Will sync correctly if I only sync contacts.
- If I try to sync media long with the contacts, it usually gets the first four music tracks, and then it fails. The phone goes out of sync mode, while the computer is still trying to sync. The computer then becomes unusable, and requires a reboot. ITunes takes all the computers resources, the computer is unresponsive, and it gets so hot it seems like it will melt.

Download and install Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC from Microsoft, it will not correct the issue with iTunes and Windows 7 but it will provide a workaround untill this can be resolved with an update or a patch from Apple or Microsoft.

This will run XP inside a window from Windows 7.
Install Itunes in the virtual XP and everything should now work.

Have you tested this? Plus613 (who may admittedly have other PC problems) stated above that XP would sync, but that it was doing so incredibly slowly.

Windows XP Mode under Windows 7 requires you to be running Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise (i.e. people like me running Home Premium are still SOL). Further, to do this legally, it would require having an extra Windows XP license.

I'm going to pickup a USB PCI card from Fry's on my way home from work. I'm very annoyed with Apple at the moment. Regardless of whether the problem is being caused by something in Windows or something in the new Intel chipset, for products this major (iPhone, Core i5/i7) this should've been discovered and corrected before being pushed out to users, causing frustration and data loss.

I might try the XP mode tonight, see if that's any faster than just native XP on the same hardware.

I don't have any PC issues, just I don't think the new PCI card worked. Windows started blue screening as soon as it went in, despite it telling me it was functioning properly.

Everything else works fine on the machine, and it's rock solid - never once crashed (excluding adding in the PCI card)

Maybe I'll try another model.

ugh ..... Of course this would happen! Windows 7 (64) / iPhone / iTunes (64). Computer recognizes the iPhone, and the computer runs iTunes - both perfectly. HOWEVER, now with both iTunes (64) & Windows 7 (64), iTunes does not recognize my iPhone!!!!! I'm sooooo frustrated and spent hours looking for a solution that apparently has yet to exist! I guess I will wait like everyone else...

I purchased an Inland Pro PCI USB 2.0 2-Port PCI card (Item#: 08335) at Fry's after work today. I am experiencing the exact same issue as plus613 with my PCI USB card. The card is detected by Windows, drivers are installed, two VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controllers appear in the Device Manager... and absolutely nothing plugged into the card is recognized. I've tried my iPhone, 2G iPod Shuffle and a plethora of flash drives.

So... back to Fry's after work tomorrow to look for a PCI USB card that is not based on a VIA chipset.

Two steps forward. One step back.

Maybe Apple, Intel or Gigabyte will resolve this issue and save me the trouble?

*Crosses fingers and holds breath*

EDIT: I've now also experienced a BSoD caused by the PCI USB card. So if you try the "Buy a PCI card" workaround, avoid anything with a VIA chipset unless it has a Windows 7 cert (note that this card is Windows Vista certified but apparently doesn't like Windows 7 x64).
