I bought 16G 3GS last week. This morning I tried to update from 3.0.1 to 3.1. Phone is now stuck in recovery mode. I followed all the steps to fix it, diff PC, USB port, uninstall etc It still wont get out of recovery mode or update. Its now useless. Is anyone able to help me please? Tried calling Apple, HA! No one there

iPhone OS 3.0.1

Disconnect it from the USB cord. Turn it off if you can by holding the sleep/wake switch until you see the red slide to off. Press and hold the home button while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Then you can restore your phone: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

Same issue here. I have tried all of the workarounds mentioned on the boards...and my phone is still just a paperweight.

If anyone has papers that need holding down, just let me know....but don't try calling my iPhone...

Hi Jim, thanks for your response. I have tried this. But the only thing the phone will display is the usb cable and the itunes icon, i hold down the off button etc, no slide comes up but it does turn off, when it restarts it goes straight to the usb & itunes icon again. Ive also tried holding down the home key and power button, it turns off, back on again, the apple comes up, I release them, and it goes back to the usb and itunes icon again. I followed all the steps in the apple (so called help) files, nothing. Cant even talk to anyone at apple, no online help available except from nice users like yourself. VERY slack Apple. I dont know what else to do. Are iPhones CRAP or am I just unlucky? Ive spent 6 hours following there crappy steps. Im goin nuts. Multi billion dollar companies screwin the little guy again! Any other suggestions I will try also. Thanks again for your response, anything else I can do? or maybe I am stuck with a paperweight too.

    Gday Surfin
Thanks for the laugh, you keep that sense of humor man, it will keep you sane. Maybe we should compare paperweights, thats assuming iPhone can even do that. Good luck to you, Ill let you know if I have any luck. Cheers bro

I cant even restore my Iphone 3GS. I get the restore message, pushed the restorebutton and the progressbar starts. Then I get the message that an "unknown problem has occured" after a while in the process. When I push the ON/OFF button I get the connect-to-Itunes-picture and the same restore message pops up. I've tried everything.

Does anyone know what to do?

I attempted to upgrade to 3.1 via my XP PC, and both iphone and PC locked up in the final phase of the update. Repeated attempts to backup the iphone resulted in the same, had to power off the PC each time. I managed to get my phone working via my laptop, downloading and installing 3.1 as new. I now have a factory reset iphone (at least it works!), but my contacts and photos are in a backup file I dare not try to restore to. The weird thing is, I was able to sync to and restore all my apps via the PC which would seem to be the cause of the problem! I have noticed a decrease in battery life since, but I have'nt had the random 'power downs' other users are reporting. Yet.........
