MACBOOK PRO & SNOW LEOPARD - OVERHEATING

Hey everyone, I have a macbook pro, early 2008 model 15 inch, 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive.
Since installing SNOW LEOPARD, my machine is now overheating.

This was an issue I believe with the previous version of Leopard, but a patch was made by apple, and the overheating issue was fixed. But I'm guessing they may have forgotten about this particular problem with the new OS.

Does anybody know anything about this or having the same problem ????

I had the same problem with overuse of memory, CPU use and temperature on my MBP5,1. In Activity Monitor there was a process something like - hdutil. Sorry, it was later in the evening and i was tired (which probably gave me the courage to do it). I force quit the process and the problem ceased. I restarted and have watched for two days. Memory and CPU use dropped to normal and the temperature decreased 50%. Your mileage may vary but it was quite dramatic for me.

Check out activity monitor and look for a process that is taking up all the room.

I do not see such an app.

my computer only get up to 90 degrees celsius (194 F) while I use some program's

dvd remaster
watching youtube (some say this is related to flash)

And that's about it.

Still no-one came up with an answer to this vital question:

WHAT TEMPERATURE IS TOO HOT?

What is a safe range? Many ppl that report here do not even report their CPU Temperature

My two cents...
I (while very excited) upgraded my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard today and the temperature (of CPU A) immediately sky rocketed to 70 degrees C, with the fans running at 4200rpm. However my CPU is running at a fairly constant 50%.
After stumbling across this thread I removed Sophos Antivirus and turned off plug-ins & java in Safari - but to no avail. The top temp. reached was 76C while on Google in Safari - GOOGLE!
I await a resolution...

Personally I've found out that my overheating problems are caused either by "WebKitPluginHost" which is supposed to be the new Safari module for 32 bits plugins (like Flash) when Running Safari at 64 bits and "Finder".

WebKitPluginHost when it starts often uses 35-60% of CPU, depending on the job it's doing/plugin it's running, I suppose.

Finder for unknown reasons sometimes consumes 99% of CPU. Closing the Finder windows usually it stops but not always (a reboot is needed).

Maybe Apple can work on improving the efficiency of the 1st and fix the clear bugs on the 2nd. Hoping 10.6.2 will fix both of them.

I have not had any problems with SL, including 10.6.2.

Has anyone with issues tried the update?

The 10.6.2 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes for:

- a graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites
- Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts
- a problem that prevented authenticating as an administrative user
- issues when using NTFS and WebDAV file servers
- the reliability of menu extras
- an issue with the 4-finger swipe gesture
- an issue that causes Mail to quit unexpectedly when setting up an Exchange server
- Address Book becoming unresponsive when editing
- a problem adding images to contacts in Address Book
- an issue that prevented opening files downloaded from the Internet
- Safari plug-in reliability
- general reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk

not when it used to be less on an os that apparently has just been optimised, its a joke.

Frankly i have gone from a stable 35ËšC idle to 50ËšC from just upgrading to sl.

Seriously this should be fixed when we have isolated the overheating problem in safari it should be quickly looked at. My cpu get a full load sometimes from watching a flash video...which rockets temps sometimes to 120ËšC. from playing a flash video? 99% of my cpu? haha i dont think so.

Since ugrading to 10.6.2 i havent had an issue like that yet but it still reports 60-70% load when running flash players :/

anyway a resting temp of 50 is not going to hurt my pc or my cpu its the overheating that worries me as i have to leave my laptop unattended and on sometimes rendering out work if i left it and it was overheating it could shorten its life dramatically. After spending over £2000 on this laptop i wouldn't call that acceptable.
