what is the max length of firewire cable?

Question

what is the max length of firewire cable?

bought a fabulous 5m long firewire 6pin to 4pin cable to use when capturing directly to my Powerbook but can't get it to work. My shorter 1m long cable works fine. What is length limitation of firewire cable and if there is one why are they making cables that are too long and don't work. (also is there a god and who will be the next president of the USA?)

This article suggests 4.5m is the longest Firewire cable you can use.

Also, there is no god, and Margaret Thatcher, in a surprise move, will become the next Presidnet of the USA. Sadly.

What are the length limitations?
* Standard 28 AWG Wire - 4.5 Meters maximum
* Fiber Optic Systems can extend the distance to 500 Meters
