Empty Trash Sound

Empty trash no longer makes a sound. Had some problems with data corruption and had to repair some apps this obviously was effected, But dont no where to start. Also discovered file movement sounds no longer work.

Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit GarageBand app. Sound should return.

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.

Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.

Have tried both of these to no avail. That is actually how I found the data corruption said I had a invalid node. Booted from disc and repaired. Fixed quicktime x which no longer worked (missing framework file). So my guess is sound files have become corrupt but I do not know how to fix that.

It appears the user interface sound effects aren't playing, as you mention 2 of them. Do we assume you have this checked in System Prefs/Sound/Sound Effects?

hi,
i had the same problem, with an iMac and SL 10.6.1. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10271185#10271185
It seems that Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner>Maintain>All solved it (at least it looks like it did, because i did not do anything else...). All my effects are back 🙂

I had the same problem with the Trash sound and I checked the Sound Preference Pane|Sound Effects and found that the "Alert Volume" slider was all the way to the left. When I moved it to the right, the sound effects were audible.

Try that.

After installing Snow Leopard 10.6.2, all of my system sounds were silent except for Volume Up/Down. In System Preferences > Sound nothing was muted and volumes were all the way up. Launching/Quitting Garage Band didn't work.

Solution: Move the com.apple.soundpref.plist preference file to the trash and empty the trash.

Same problem here, resolved as Jefferson Seaver said, but after rebooting.

PS: I deleted both /Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.soundpref.plist
