Time Machine Failing

I am trying to help my parents solve a Time Capsule issue.

The TC will backup my fathers MBP laptop fine, but it will not back up my mother's MB nor her iMac. i have made sure that on both machines that TC is the backup disk chosen but we keep getting failure messages.

17" MacBook Pro Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Simply says "Failed" in red in the Time Machine menu

Open the Time Machine panel in System Preferences. Does that show you any more information?

If not, launch the Console utility, access "All Messages" on the left, then enter "backupd" (without quotes) in the search box. You may see useful messages there.

Now I simply get the message:

Time Machine could not complete the backup.

Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.

Interesting. Earlier today I installed the "Security Update 2009-005 (Leopard)". Since then I've been unable to mount my Time Machine disk or the USB disk attached to it. As a result, I'm seeing the same "Failed" status in Time Machine.

This may have nothing to do with others' problems, but I was able to recover access to the Time Capsule internal and external drives by cycling power to my Time Capsule.
