    Of course my warranty expired just before I started having this problem. Hopefully Apple will be able to fix this soon. I'm getting tired of turning 3g on and off.

    Yeah, I'll just throw my two cents in. I started having this same issue yesterday, and it grew progressively worse over the last 24 hours. I also recently updated OS, and also just happen to be on week out of warranty. My phone as of now is sitting idle with NO SERVICE on top, as it has been most of today. I cannot get anything now.

    I got the same answers that everyone else has, and have done the same things, actually on my own before Apple instructed me to try it.

    Is there an Apple person reading any of this? We need help!

    Well lets hope this almost 200 reply thread will get someones attention.

    I cant believe that there hasn't been a software fix yet... must be costing Apple heaps in replacement phones... Also i wonder why it has only affected some phones.... all strange.

    Just a pity my phone ran out of warranty 2 months before this happened! - speaking of that i love how apple sent an email to me about extending my warranty after it had run out!

    Oh the hassle...

    Just to add my response to the thread:

    I am noticing the same "zombie" phone almost every day. The reset of Network Settings did not do the trick, although I haven't tried the "turn off 3G" fix. This is extremely frustrating, as I didn't have this problem until I upgraded the OS to 3.1, and now I don't know when I ever get a call or message. The phone is almost worthless at the moment.

    Both my husband and I are having the same problem. It began occurring after loading 3.1. I have a 3G and he has a 3GS. Apple needs to read all of these posts and create 3.1.1 to fix the problem. I have to shut down my phone at least twice per day in order to get the calls that have not downloaded to my phone. I can not dial out either as the call just gets stuck and will not send.
    This is a big problem in an emergency both not knowing if there are calls from my children or not being able to dial out. Apple, when is the fix coming??

    Add me to the list too. I've got a 3G that started going into zombie mode about once a day since I upgraded to 3.1. Turning off 3G seems to have patched the problem for now.

    This is a long thread, and we are indeed an SOL lot (myself included). However, given that there are millions of iPhone users out there I wonder whether our troubles are representative of the average user experience, or whether we are the chosen few that won the "thank you sir may I have another" lottery (I can only bend over so long for Apple). I would expect this thread to be roughly 10, 100, or even 1000 times longer if this were indeed a widespread problem. Leads me to conclude that this is a low priority for Apple.

    There are at least 3 other threads, one of which has over 144 pages now, and 200k+ views.

    Definitely a widespread problem, we are just the chosen few who have apple support forum acocunts, heh.

    My girlfriend updated to 3.1, I, having been through these update nightmares before (since apple uses users as a kind of awesome public Beta) stayed on 3.0.

    Now she's reporting the problem constantly and getting all kinds of upset. It's very frustrating.

    I expected better from Apple, considering that this kind of lock up in your pocket silently behavior is precisely what drove me away from Windows Mobile.

    Same problem here. Started happening the day I installed 3.1, and it's very intermittent. Can't even tell if it's an issue until you try to dial out, and it just hangs there. Fixes itself when the phone is restarted.

    Nothing new to report other than count me in to the pool of troubles since going to 3.1 a couple of days ago. Tried turing 3G off and will see how that goes today. Guess I'll spend the day trying to find the 3.0 OS to put back on and open a ticket with Apple.

    Same Problem. Bought 3 phones about two weeks ago and all three phones are having the issue.

    Called tech support yesterday and they say they have never heard anything like this. I have a genius appointment schedule for Saturday. I know that it is a waste of time, but I am going anyway and I am printing out this entire thread to take with me. When they tell me that they have never heard of this problem I am going to show them everyone's complaints.

    Apple just posted OS update 3.1.2 and specifically addresses "periodic outages". I don't know if this addresses the coma mode issues but am updating now. We'll see.

    Notes on 3.1.2:

    This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

    - Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
    - Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
    - Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

    BTW, when the update finished, it said there were carrier setting updates. I did that also.
