Garmin Nuvi 765T and iPhone Bluetooth

Has anyone experienced success with pairing the Garmin Nuvi 765T and iPhone 3GS? Under iPhone 3.0.1, the Nuvi would pair only after two failures and then re-pairing via the iPhone. Then, only handsfree features were available; no contacts, call home, or any other feature. After upgrade to iPhone 3.1, the Garmin and iPhone pair automatically with contact list and all features EXCEPT handsfree. The iPhone Bluetooth control panel shows connected, but does not report the name of the bluetooth device (Nuvi 765T). And very disconcerting not to have handsfree connectivity.

I have just purchased the Garmin nüvi 775T. I came home with it, plugged it into the computer, logged into the Garmin website and updated all that needed updating, including the Firmware. I also have an iPhone 3G all up-to-date (OS 3.1) which i was hoping to pair with the 775T via Bluetooth to use for handsfree communications while driving.

While i seem to be able to pair the two without too much difficulty, have managed to sync contacts, set home number and dial contacts via the nüvi interface, the handsfree function does not seem to work. In other words, for example, if i make a call through my iphone using the nüvi interface, the call gets made but i then have to hold the phone to my ear to the phone as normal (using the iPhone speaker & mic) as the audio does not get routed to the nüvi as expected. Also, while the nüvi is in my list of bluetooth devices on my iPhone 3G, it is without a name.

My experience would appear to be exactly the same as yours Ned. After ages looking around for other discussions about this problem, with no success, i am happy to finally find i am not alone (if regretful of the circumstances which unite us).

Any help resolving this matter would be hugely appreciated as one of the major selling points of the nüvi 775T for me was the bluetooth pairing. I'm beginning to have the feeling it might be a matter of waiting for another iPhone update and hoping that addresses this specific problem though.

I was having this problem and then I tried something which appears to have fixed the problem.

On the nuvi I went to Tools > Settings > Bluetooth and then Edit Friendly Name and changed it to "nuvi gps". This deletes the longer default name and the accented u.

Now the handsfree works i.e. I can use the speaker and microphone of the nuvi for making and answering calls.

Good luck!

... Same problem here ... still have to pick up the iphone, even though voice dialing and everything else is perfect. here is the what i wrote to garmin and the idiot response ...

"Message Body: my iphone links with unit perfectly and i can voice dial etc .... but I
am forced to pick up my phone because the phone does not link to the
speaker on the nuvi ... i can't use the nuvi handsfree. Am i missing a
setting???"

and the response .... Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I would be happy to help you. You can use the Nuvi handsfree, but not
every phone supports the voice dial through BlueTooth.

If there is anything else, please let me know.

Just purchased a iPhone 3GS and received a nuvi 765T for Christmas and experienced the exact same problem as posted here (thank goodness for the Internet). I applied the name change as described and no luck at first. Once a turned off my iPhone and powered on again, the nuvi showed up under the iPhone Bluetooth settings and hands free / audio calling worked fine. One interesting item however. I renamed my GPS again but the original name ( renamed from factory) kept being displayed. I suspect that the iPhone associates name to H/W I'd somehow and does not load a new name. No problem - I renamed GPS back to previous just to keep things consistent. Thanks to everyone here for posting this fix!

I had the same issue with Nuvi 1490T and Iphone - pair it, works fine. Move out of range or power off Nuvi - I would have to re-discover and pair.

I updated to map 2010_30 on the nuvi and changed the friendly name on the nuvi to "moms car" -
did the pairing again. Works as advertised.

Thanks Kind people for the info.

I tried the renaming process and it worked on my iPhone 3G and Nuvi 765t. It is ESSENTIAL to do a full re-boot on the iPhone (press and hold the menu button and power button until the apple appears) Audio paring on my phone and GPS did not work until I did the forced reboot of the iPhone. The problem appears to be with the dotted u causing an issue on the iPhone. This should be an easy fix for Apple. I know they are up to the task, All they need to do is make it a priority.
