New MacBook Pro won't connect to the internet while other computers will

I just got my new Mac Book Pro yesterday. I am not able to get on the internet with the wireless airport. I can do a direct wired connect and that works just fine but I need a wireless connection. I have a good connection with the airport but can not get on the internet. My old Mac G4 connects just fine and everything eles works. What do I do now. With the wired connection I updated the software and that did not help. I am ready to take it back to the store. Please help me. Thanks 🙂

Is everything set to automatic/ Using DHCP/ in your network preferences?
Their may be a profile that it is holding onto. Thus keeping you from connecting to the network you want.
So you are connected to the base station, but you can't get an outside (internet) signal?
Have you double checked that you are indeed on YOUR network not "linksys" or something?

Yes I am connected to my network. In fact I was on the phone with Apple last night for 2 hours. They where not able to help me and then we got disconected. I took the new Macbook back to Bestbuy they gave me a brand new one. I took it home and had the same problem. I spent 3 hours on the phone with Belkin this morning and they can not help me. They say that the computer is connected to the network but the browser can not connect. I can connect with a wired connection and my other Mac G4 works fine and I have a windows pc that connects just fine too. I am so upset that after 5 hours on the phone and a new Macbook I still can not connect to the internet with the airport. I am going to call Apple tonight and try again. If anybody has any idea please let me know.

Sorry about the experience. I am willing to bet there is nothing wrong with your Macbook. Your Airport antenna is connecting fine (as you stated). I am assuming you can ping your router? Either 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 10.0.1.1, 10.0.0.1. Whatever you set it up as. Have you setup the router? Like gone into the firmware and made changes? You do this usually by typing in the address of the router (see above) and logging into it. Belkin may have had you do this. Also have you reset it?
If time is important you may want to go pickup an inexpensive wireless router that can be returned. I usually use netgear for testing (They are cheap). See if you can get connected with that. Then obviously you know who the culprit is. Go to a coffee shop or friends and try to connect to their wifi. If you can then throw away the belkin.
Just thought of encryption. Do you have any? What type of encryption? Passwords and keychain management can keep you from being connected as well.

I wanted to thank you for your time and info. I am very hopefull that I can get it fixed tonight. I am going to try many different things that I have been reading about today. Belkin did have me try many different things and reset everything. They where very nice and spent a lot of time with me but that did not fix the problem. I am going to turn off the security and try an open connection. If that does not work I am going to a friends to try there network. I do not want to spend more money on a new router if I do not have to. Anyway thanks again and have a great day. 🙂

I'm having similar problems unfortunately. When I first bought my Macbook Pro, it worked fine on the Internet, but since then I have been compeltely unable to access any wireless networks. Admittedly, I haven't tried plugging it into the modem directly, but ideally I would like to get it running on the wireless. I am able to conntect to the network, but having attempted to access the Internet on several different wireless networks, i'm beginning to think that it is a problem with the Macbook Pro itself.

As far as I am aware, I haven't changed any of the Internet settings on the Macbook Pro. Other laptops are able to access the Internet through my current wireless connection, including my girlfriend who uses a regular Macbook. Is there anything I can try to resolve this?

By the way, I know that this isn't overly helpful, but I'm not sure which OS i'm using at the moment. I'm a recent PC convert, so I'm relatively new to all the world of Apple Macs!

I just got done dealing with this. It took me 2 days and after 5 hours on the phone with Apple and Belkin they could not help me. I found out what to do after reading the forms. Try turning off the security on your router first. Then reset the router. Open the MacBook network preferences go to advanced setting for the airport. Delete your network connection. Now turn off your airport then turn it back on. Find your network again and connect now that the security if off. When this is done restart your MacBook. You should be able to connect now. This worked for me. I did not want to keep my network open so I then added the WPA2 security if you have it or use WPA pick a password and then start the process again. Reset the router. Open the MacBook network preferences go to advanced setting for the airport. Delete your network connection. Now turn off your airport then turn it back on. Find your network again and connect putting in the password this time. Now restart the MacBook and with some luck you should be good to go. I was ready to throw my MacBook out a window before I figured this out. Please let me know if you need more details than this. Good luck.

Michelle, you are the best! That got everything working and my Mac is now back on the Internet for the first time in about three months! Not even the guys in the Apple Store knew what was wrong with it. Good work!

You are very welcome. I am glad that I can help others that are feeling the stress and pain of having there shinny new MacBook Pro not working. I really do hope Apple finds a way to fix this so it just works the first time. I am still having problems with my connection dropping out. It happens when it feels like it and I am not sure why. I found and easy fix. Just disconnect the airport and then reconnect it. This fixed it every time for me. Good luck with everything. 🙂

Another solution which is definately working after two days of investigation is that:

If you just purchased MacBookPro Late 2009 with Snow Leopard OS, following tip is for you getting internet connection (WIFI) working. (This is for non Apple routers, E.G. D-Link)

Here we go:

1. Update you software once you install Snow Leopard.
2. Turn off your AIRPORT settings.
2. Log into your router (For D-link would be 10.1.1.1 using admin option.
3. Change your Security settings from "WEP" to "WPA2" security type.
4. Restart your modem & swith on AIRPORT again.

Definately it will work.

One thing I got told by Apple Support here in England was to add a new Location when it would only work within a few meters of the router. I added a new one and changed my channel from 4 to 11 and it works great once again.

Oh my gosh...... Are you guys using the Belkin N1 router as well? I thought i was the only person in this whole world who faces this problem. I spent hours calling Apple Tech Support as well as Belkin's but no one was able to help me. Just like to check....I noe this is an Apple forum but how do we reset the router? I did it b4 (in the process of trying to get my macbook to work) and it is a long long time. Anyone can help?

My MBP is having the same issue. It will not connect to any wifi network with any form of encryption (WEP, WPA, WPA2). But when I turn the encryption off, it has no issues connecting. I cleared keychains, removed all preferred networks, reset my router, tried a different router completely, and did a clean install of snow leopard thinking something could be corrupted with no luck. So I made an appointment at my nearest Apple store. The "genius" turned on my laptop as I was explaining what was wrong and he said "ooh look it connected." At that point I knew he wasn't going to be much help. The wifi network in the Apple store was not encrypted. After much discussion and a lot of "I've already tried that," the genius decided to send the laptop back to Apple to have engineering look at it. So I will be without my MBP for 7 or so days without any way of knowing if it is fixed until I get it back. The genius has recommended they replace the airport card. Hopefully that will remedy the problem. I will keep everyone informed of what I find out.
