gtalk problems in ichat as well as adium

Hi...

this has been driving me crazy... i have setup ichat and adium for gtalk, but both of them keep disconnecting... this has started only recently... i use adium for facebook chat and yahoo as well... these seem to be working fine... its only gtalk that keeps disconnecting... even when i log into gmail, the chat on the left side keeps disconnecting...
when i reboot into windows using bootcamp, the gtalk messenger works perfectly, so its not an issue with ISP...
I have no clue y this is happening...

someone help!!!

Hi,

So to clarify - Any login to the Google talk service from any app including a web Browser to the Google Mail page and using the chat there seems to suffer disconnections or drops in service ?

I know that if iChat is Open and Logged in to A GoogleTalk Buddy list that going to the Google Mail web page option logs iChat Out.
Relaunching (relogging in) the Buddy Lists drops the Web page option out.

(I have not tried AdiumX with iChat or the Web page to see if it happens there)

I would suspect though that Google only allows you to be logged in once, unlike any AIM based Screen Name that can be set for multiple Logins.

I would look to which app is logged in when and if it is retrying to login when you are not actually expecting it to. (Consider use in Other Mac User Accounts as Tests or on other computers and even linking web sites like Tokbox and Meebo)

Yes... thats right...

regarding ur next point... there have been instances where i was logged in with ichat as well as gtalk on safari... i would receive msgs on both ichat as well as safari...
again this was all before the problem started....

i will try using other macs on the same network to see what is happening...
but any idea why gtalk works fine on a windows pc and not on the mac? quite strange... 🙂

Umm,

My Firefox seems to handle it differently.
If I log in to GoogleMail and chat from there My iChat Buddy List is logged out.
The reverse is true if I log into the Gmail page first.

However I seem to be able to chat to the Buddy in both places as if they were two separate Chats. (neither text is repeated in the other (I Did only test this in Leopard/iChat 4.x) )

Hi,

In/for iChat you could delete com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist as this would force a refreshed Login.

This does not explain the others.

I would look to the System Preferences > Security > Firewall and make sure it is not set to Essentials. iChat is not an Essential App and I doubt the other are either.

Hi Ralph....

thanks for all the suggestions... sadly that didnt help... 😟
i even deleted all the plist files related to ichat... did a complete setup of ichat from the start... still it disconnects within 5 mins of connecting....

i really dont know what else to do... i found something online called snow leopard cache cleaner... there is a step they have called system cache clean... to be done as a last resort... anyone know if there is any harm in doing that?

If it offers different level of Cleaning go for the simplest, least invasive.

Most Browser have a setting/option for clearing their Caches within the Preferences and I would use that so you know when it is done.

This might seem totally unrealted but if you have ever had a MoblileMe name, even on Trial, try turning Off Back to My Mac in System Preferences > MobileMe.
If there is no name in MobileMe it will not be accessible and will be Off anyway.

Ok,

Then I would look at whether the Internet connection is continuous.
A Web Browser and mail apps only us e the internet now and then in reality just when then change pages or get or send mail.

IF you are WiFi to your routing device I would consider that first.
IF other nearby WiFi routers are on a close to your device's channel you may get interference and you will lose connection.
Other issues could be electromagnetic interference from power transformers form Printers, laptops, scanners and other peripherals as well as power cables in walls and even close by Microwave ovens.

Try changing the channel your device is using. By Default most are set to a mid range channel so I would tend to choose one at either end of the range.
