mac mini on hisense tv?

I am trying to get yhe right resolution for my mini on my monitor/tv. I have loads of options of resolutions from 640x 480 all the way to 2048x1536.Half of them when i click on them work and half it comes up "invalid mode" or "out of range". I think my monitors recommended resolution of 1400 x 900 but there is no option for that and whenever I try that other thing swirchresx it causes an invalid mode and i have to reinstall mac os x to get rid off resolution settings! Any help would be nice and really appreciated ! btw im on 1600x1200 and while its fine I feel like there is a better resolution between it and 1280x768 which makes things on my screen to large to do any serious stuff with especially garageband etc.
