Sound output reverting to internal speakers after restart

After upgrading to 10.6.1, each time I restart (or log out and log in) the sound output reverts back to the internal speakers even though I've set it to USB SoundSticks. I've repaired permissions, reset PRAM, repaired the disk with DiskWarrior 4.2r909 - with no luck.

Didn't do it for me ... first of all there is no "Audio" folder in the directory "Library\Preferences". There is an "Audio" folder in the Library file. I deleted that folder and never got a request for my password at the deletion; and the same thing happened on the re-start.

Is it possible that I need to go into the "Users" library folder?

O.K. I'm sorry that I didn't explain the details clearly so lets try again.

First delete the Caches by following these steps ...

1) Open Finder & under the Devices column on the left.
2) Click on your boot up hard drive to display the folders located there.
3) Click on the Library folder icon.
4) Click on the Caches folder icon.
5) Click on the Action button from the tool bar then click Move to Trash.
6) Repeat step 2.
7) Click on the System folder icon.
8) Repeat steps 3, 4 & 5.
9) Repeat step 2.
10) Click on the Users folder icon.
11) Click on your user name.
12) Repeat steps 3, 4 & 5.

And now the Audio folder ...

13) Repeat steps 2 & 3.
14) Scroll down to the Preferences Folder & click on it.
15) Click on the Audio folder.
16) Repeat step 5.
17) Reboot.

Let me know how it goes.

Open up your hard drive and click on Library>Preferences and drag the folder named 'Audio' to the trash (you'll be asked to confirm your password when doing so). This allows Mac to create a new set of audio preferences, which will fix the issue. Solution above by Buzz is almost there, as the files suggested for being deleted are contained in the 'Audio' folder, but if you don't delete the folder itself nothing will change. No need to worry about deleting caches.

This did the trick for me, I think. I've had one successful restart (after trashing the folder) and audio stayed defaulted to Soundsticks.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, however I have no audio folder inside my preferences folder. Any advice?

Hmm, that's odd but how did you install Snow Leopard? As an update or as a clean install?

The reason why I'm asking this is because there wasn't a '/Library/Preferences/Audio folder' with Leopard. Snow Leopard added this Audio folder & moved these 2 plist's there.

Are these 2 plist's located in the '/Library/Preferences folder' ?

If this Audio folder is missing then you may need to try some else.

Let me know ...

Thank you for that info because it clears up though's I had.

Hmm, I think I know what the problem is now but I need to know one more thing first.

Open 'Activity Monitor' and from the tool bar, click on & change "My Process' to 'All Processes, Hierarchically'. Now look for a 'Process' named 'coraudiod' and let me know if it's there. I believe that it's not loading and the reason why you don't have any sounds.

Let me know and we'll go from there.

First, drag these 2 files to your desktop ...

(your boot up drive)/Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
(your boot up drive)/Library/Preferences/Audio/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

Then delete the caches ...

(your boot up drive)/System//Library/Caches
(your boot up drive)/Library/Caches
(your boot up drive)/Users/(your user name)/Library/Caches

Now Reboot, Delete the Trash & Redo Audio 'Preferences'.

cheers
