iPhone 3G won't turn on... help?

My daughter's iPhone suddenly stopped working.

We thought the battery had died so we tried charging it over night. The next morning it was still dead. We tried a different charger thinking maybe the charger was bad, but still nothing. We tried plugging it into the computer, outlet, everything, and nothing works. We tried different cords, nothing.

The phone is completely black. If you connect it to the computer (or plug it into the wall) nothing happens. Nothing lights up or displays on the screen and neither the computer nor iTunes sees the phone. Hard reset does not work either. The phone was still under warranty, but it got a little bit of water on it a long time ago, and they will not warranty it. It has worked fine for months since it got a little water on it. Only one of the water sensors shows it got wet. It had been working fine until it suddenly just died.

To make matters worse, I updated the software on my iPhone and now it is useless. It is stuck in recovery mode and errors out every time I try to restore it. So now we have two iPhones that are permanently in paper weight mode. I bought my daughter a new cell phone (non-Apple) and ironically now it would be nice if I could get her old iPhone working to use as a backup while mine is dead.

Does anyone know anyway to fix this phone??? Or the other one...

just do the "reset" (holding the power button and the button under display for a few seconds). Sometimes after reset, iPhone will stay turned off. Just turn it on and it should bootup normally.
However, this seems as a VERY big bug in the OS 3.1 😟 as many of users has the same problems... I had two crashes today...
Looking for 3.01 ipsw and doing restore... 3.1 is unusable at this time 😟

SInce update. I have noticed a few things..

1. The Iphone is definitely slower to respond that it was before the update.
2. 3 times now, the status bar across the top has locked. Each time it was with Phone as No Service and Battery indicator didn't move. It did this also after an overnight recharge and I thought "Darn-it, it didn't recharge".. However I was on WIFI in bed and decided I'd recharge at work. It worked fine. However, driving to work, out of WIFI range, the no service stayed on. I rebooted and hey presto, the phone connected to AT&T and Phone showed full charge.

I am a HEAVY user. The update before this one since the biggest drop in responsiveness. This update just adding to that a little bit again. The apps were all fine, it's just the feel, clicking, dragging, and all that...

it happened to me 3 times yesterday over a period of one hour and twice already today. The only way to bring the phone back to life was to hold Power + Sleep buttons for about 10 seconds and it starts working again.

THANK YOU! Man I was about to freak out this morning when my wife's 3G wouldn't turn on. Upgraded to 3.1 OS night before last and everything was fine... 'til this morning when her phone wouldn't turn on. Plugged it in... nothing. I tried holding down the two buttons but nothing was happening -- apparently I just wasn't holding them down long enough. Googled on "iphone 3g 3.1 won't turn on" and found this thread.

(so far no issues, yet, with 3.1 OS on my 2G)

Thanks imbGraff!! Almost had a heart attack! iPhone was working fine one minute and the next it was completely unresponsive. Nothing worked. Tried plugging it in, syncing, reboot. Guess I didn't hold in the buttons long enough. I hope they fix it. I could be missing important calls/emails and not know it till you notice your phone isn't on!

wow thanks imbGraff..

I just woke up thought it was going to be a perfect Sunday just to notice my phone had lost charge.

I plugged in on the computer didn't work, I ran outside to my car wailing my arms in the air like a lunatic, and didn't work either.

But thanks that 2 button reset worked fine, it just turned on and I'm charging it.

Hope this doesn't occur again!

Thank You!

I had to restore using the 3.01 firmware. The hard reset didn't even work. I cannot install 3.1 even after restoring. If the hard reset (holding the power and sleep buttons down for approximately 10 seconds) doesn't work I suggest downloading 3.01 and restoring from that. That was the only thing that worked for me. You can do a Google search for iPhone firmware. Once you have downloaded the firmware, hold the shift key down while clicking the restore button in iTunes. This will allow you to select the file you would like to use. Select the 3.01 file you downloaded.

I hope this helps someone. I was upset for days because my phone was nothing more than a paperweight and I could get no help from Apple.

Very disappointed in Apple...

I ordered my 3G S the day they came out in the UK and have had no problems with it... until today (10th October)! iPhone was on, walked out the rood to get the USB connection lead and when I came back it was dead. Black screen, nothing working, not recognised by my Mac etc. The phone still had 60% battery power before it died. Came straight to the Apple Discussions and with thanks to Ladislav Soukup (who posted the 'reset' method first) and imbGraff (a close second) the iPhone sprang into life after holding down the power and sleep buttons together for about 10 seconds.

Phew. Incidentally, I updated to 3.1 some time ago with no ill effects, but was going to update to 3.1.2 this weekend. Will do so within the next 10 mins...

Anyone know what causes the iPhone to play dead like this??

Right, so my phone had no problems whatsoever, and now every so often (probably about 3/4 times a day) when I hit the home button to 'wake' the iPhone, it doesn't respond.

BUT *if I leave it a few minutes and try again it works fine*. It's like the phone doesn't respond to anything whilst it's having a bit of a mood. My girlfriend called my phone when it was 'sleeping' like this and she got a ringtone, but the phone didn't react. Tried all the buttons etc.

Now I can reset it fine when this happens, but it's a bit of a pain.

I'm on iPhone OS 3.1 on an iPhone3G 16GB. Does 3.1.2 solve this problem?

Anybody else get this?
