HP Scanner No Longer Works with Snow Leopard

Hi:

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.1). I have an HP DeskJet F4280 All-In-One. It used to work great under 10.5.x, but now it will print fine but not scan.

*If I* launch HP Device Manager, and double-click “Scan Picture”, “HP Scan Pro” window opens, but I get the following error: “Sorry, scanner could not be initialized (Scanner not found.)”.

*If I* press the hardware “Scan” button on the top of the unit itself, the power light blinks rapidly for about 10 seconds, then reverts to its normal state, and nothing else happens.

*If I* launch “Image Capture” 6.0(424) I get this error: “No camera or scanner connected”.

*If I* follow the path, System Preferences>Print & Fax>Scan a window opens that reads “HP Deskjet F4200 series” and I click on “Scanner”, but it says “No scanner selected”.

However, “System Profiler” lists “Deskjet F4200 series” under USB High-Speed Bus, and, as already mentioned, the printer works fine.

Any advice to get my scan function enabled again would be most gratefully appreciated. Thank you!

Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Try one of the suggestions on this help page from HP

"Preview" suggestion worked for me!

Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise!

This is a great link. Unfortunately it does not solve the problem.

• At the bottom of the link, it says that the HP Deskjet F4200 series is supported for multiple functions, including Scan capability.
• However, the scan capability does not work in any of the three options they give for scanning (Preview, Image Capture, nor Printer browser).
• I tried the trouble-shooting procedure they gave under “Important Gotcha”. Unfortunately, the scan and print icons permanently disappeared after that process. At least initially the buttons were present before running HP’s trouble-shooting procedure, but the Scan Icon didn’t list my HP Deskjet F4200 series as an option; now the Scan Icon is totally gone!

Thanks again for your time.

You need to make sure you have uninstalled all of the previous HP files and programs.

HP Scan Pro no longer works and needs deleting.
Once that is done, then try Software Update and see if there are any new HP drivers.
There definitely are new drivers out..
Also make sure you delete all your printers from the Print/Fax preference pane.
Then ADD your printer.
This should work.

You rock!!! Thank you very much.

For others with this same problem, I did as Joseph suggested and removed all previous HP files. Specifically, I used the "HP Uninstall" option.

The problem was not fixed at this point, since the scan buttons still didn't show up despite re-adding the printer software after the Software Update finished. However, after restarting my CPU, all then worked as promised.

Again, thank you so much!

Doug,

Looks like HP just came out with new drivers today for this printer and HP Scan Pro is back for this and a few other models.

It is going to be very hard to figure out which ones are going to have the Scan Pro and which ones it will work on.

For me, I can no longer follow HP directions on deleting the Hp Device Manager and Scan Pro according to their document.

This is getting far too confusing for me and HP printers...
The Scan Pro for many models still does not work but now some of the new ones do...

Listen the HP Architect as he has the best info. Not even HP's website is as up to date...

Good luck everyone with HP printers...

Doug,

If your device is one of the devices we have posted updates for (see the FAQ thread) then you can go to [HP.com/support|http://www.hp.com/support] and type in your model number to get the latest software. But only if your device is one that we have already released an update for.

Note, that in your case I can say we have released an update for your Photosmart C5280, and if you want a direct link to the download page for your device, [here|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=219&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us &lang=en&product=3204464] you go. Its the first item in the list.

Just trying to help.

Andrew
