How do I find the codec used for a .mov file?

I have a .mov file from 2001 that I can't play. How do I find the correct codec to use for this. Is there somewhere in the file itself some kind of reference to the codec used? I've installed pretty much everything I could find in terms of codecs. I don't care whether on mac or windows. Just need the right codec.

hit command (control on PC) + I
this will pop up a dialog window giving the file properties, it should show you what codecs are used for video and audio, however, i dont know if it shows a codec if you dont have it installed
you can also hit Command+J
which will give more information, but i find its not quite as simplified for what you need to know as command+i
