And if you lose the adapter, you can't adjust the shuffle without it.... Buying an adapter is a workaround for a bad design decision.. APPLE should have provided basic volume and play controls as with prev Gen... just repackaged in this new design.. That would have made this a product for discussion.. NEW Colors IMO are not typically knows in the TECH world as innovative... APPLE really dropped the ball on this one..

Scenario.. your apple buds break... you call apple.. they send you new buds (that was nice of them) in a couple of days.. Can't use your shuffle until then.. even though you have other IPOD buds.. won't be able to adjust volume..next song.. etc..

OK.. you get new buds from APPLE... they break in two weeks.. call APPLE,,they will replace, they send you new buds (that was nice again).. in a couple of days.. Can't use your shuffle until then..

Wonder how many sets they will send? Do I need to send my set to APPLE first before they send me a replacement? That may take a few more days. Shuffle will be out of commission even longer.. hmm

Go figure..

If you buy an adapter you can leave it plugged into the Shuffle (I do) so if you lose the adapter you've also lost the Shuffle. Same as you can do with any Shuffle.

And if the controls messed up on the 2nd Generation Shuffle (which they sometimes did) you had to wait a couple of days to get a replacement Shuffle so you couldn't use it.

Of course if you are in NYC you can just go to one of the Apple Stores and exchange them.

And no, they send you the new set first.

Just think about that commnent.. that was the same one that I received when I got my first iphone and had to attach a monster cable adapter to it so that I could use noise canceling headset, B&Os.. etc. with it.. WHAT DID APPLE EVENTUALLY DO.. THEY FIXED THE HARDWARE AND MADE IT SO ALL HEADSETS COULD WORK, NOT JUST APPLE...

SO NOW I AM WALKING AROUND WITH AN IPHONE AND A DANGLING ADAPTER FROM IT ALL THE TIME.. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.. APPLE NEEDS A REDESIGN..

deggie.. DO YOU WORK FOR APPLE? SOUNDS LIKE YOU DO BECAUSE YOU KEEP COMING UP WITH EXCUSES AND WORKAROUNDS...

Anyway thanks for the feedback..

The only problem with the first iPhone headphone jack was it was recessed. A little work with some tools and the adapter wasn't needed.

Since they just released the second batch of Shuffles, and the controls still are not on it, you'll have to wait until at least next September for one that MAY have controls on it. And why are you walking around with an iPhone and a dangling adapter from it all the time? You have to use an adapter for your iPhone still? Why?

Nope, don't work for Apple. The first workaround I posted was prior to the adapter being released and I just wanted a way to use the Shuffle without the volume control problems. And it worked. But I was really waiting for the adapter so I could use my headphones. Or you can buy other headphones with inline controllers that work with the Shuffle and sound much better than the Apple ones. And I really don't care that I'm walking around with a Shuffle with an adapter plugged into it, I also have my UE headphones plugged into the adapter. Really doesn't look that much different.

I would appreciate it though if you would stop shouting at us.

Sounds like the 3rd Generation Shuffle is not the product for you. I'd suggest that you don't buy one.

Apologies for yelling All..

deggie, you are a heavy user on the forum and I just find it difficult to keep hearing about your workarounds when this forum and the feedback site is the perfect forum to tell Apple that their design needs improvement. If Apple could put the basic 2G controls back to the 3G shuffle, then what would be the downside? IMO, a win/win for all of us. Those who love the Apple buds (with our without the inline controls), those who love their own buds. Guess the only loser would be the companies that were making a profit selling all those adapters that you bought(and Apple for trying to push their own buds). Just think, you and many of us may never need to buy another headset adapter for an Apple product ever again. Actually, I personally don't think anyone should have to buy an adapter, but to each their own.

And... maybe someday the Apple buds will be so great (which i have to give Apple credit, they are improving in sound quality each iteration.. vis a vi improvements in the player and/or the buds) that anyone purchasing an Apple product would never venture to use anyone else's.. that would be perfect.. That would be almost Apple Nirvana..

Don't get me wrong.. I have and will always be an Apple customer.. I owned the first Macintosh that Apple created (you know, the one where there was that runner that throws the sledge hammer into to screen commercial)so trust me, I am all Apple fan from many years back. But when I've grown up with Apple and to see them in recent years, make some poor design decisions, then I do get a bit upset. As a shareholder, I am very happy and very well off for it.

Bottom line.. I personally want to see Apple do the right thing.. put the basic contols back to the most basic of the ipod line.. Leave the hi tech voice over etc.. BS to the more expensive ipods and give us just a plain old small form factor player that has play, stop, volume up and volume down..

Anyway, thanks for your responses..

Actually,

This is a discussion forum that allows users to express our opinions... you telling us about the workarounds and me recommending that anyone having the same issues, to voice it in the forum and maybe we won't need this thread in the future..

Do your own root cause analysis... Workarounds are the quick fix.. which you have many and we greatly appreciate all of them...

Now Apple needs to perform their own assessment hopefully they will update next Sept...

Good luck all with your adapters and workarounds.. as deggie pointed out in his link.. use the feedback and maybe Apple will do an update and provide us with "some" on the shuffle controls.
