QuickTime 7.0.2 install fails Error 1402

I know this error has been posted by many others but I still have not seen a definitive solution to fix.

Error 1402 on Quicktime 7.0.2 install. Could not open key: HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QuickTime. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Seems at some point in the previous upgrades to iTunes and QuickTime my registry got messed up. I have read a all the posts and do not want to install QuickTime Alternative. I have managed to reinstall iTunes 4.9 and QuickTime 6.5 and don't plan on uninstalling unless there is definite viable solution to installing iTunes 5.0 and QuickTime 7.0.

The problem is when the quicktime install tries to access the registry entry HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\QuickTime it does not have access to it nor do I. I have all the administrative rights to modify the registry entry but it must be corrupt or something because I cannot delete or modify it.

Does anyone know how to delete this registry entry? Will deleting the entry fix the problem and allow the QuickTime install to continue?

From what I seen with QT 6.5, is, that registry key would remove QT from the add/remove control panel. When add/remove control panel was not used at first to remove QT. Unvise32qt exe the uninstaller for QT 6.5 when removed manually would result in going into the registry and deleting that key to get QT out of the add/remove control panel.
I don't have a viable solution, hopefully there will be more post to follow up on this.
I was able to get QT7 to install with what I mentioned in previous post's. What seemed to work for me was updating to SP2, which I read in Apple Read me, to have the latest updates for the OS.
I also competely removed QT, and all in the registry, I was reckless in the registry, and depended on the XP OS to find the next key. It finally installed. Windows installer cleanup also was used.

I finally got the new iTunes and Quicktime to load. Here’s what I did…

1. Completely uninstall every Symantec product on your machine (I have a new HP Media Center PC running XP and SP2; and Norton System Works and Internet Security 2005).

Maybe try disabling your Symantec products first—-I’d already uninstalled them by the time I thought about SAFE MODE

2. Restart in SAFE MODE and log in as the Administrator (hold down F8 during startup).

3. Start “regedit” and navigate to:

HKEY LOCALMACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall/Quicktime

It still told me that I didn’t have permission to do anything, but in SAFE MODE, I could see values in the right-hand window where I couldn’t in regular mode—-that gave me hope.

4. Right-click on “Quicktime” and select “Permissions…”

5. Click “Add”

6. Click “Advanced”

7. Click “Find Now”

8. Highlight “Everyone” and Click “Ok”

9. Check the box to allow “Full Control”

10. Click “Ok”

11. Right-click on “Quicktime” again and choose “delete”

I installed the newest Quicktime from the stand alone installer, but I think it would have worked from the iTunes installer too, since both were getting hung up on that one registry key.

I got an error—-1608, I think—-but ignored it and everything worked, even after a restart.

Hope this helps.
