SSH Tunnel / SOCKS Proxy

I have a windows workstation for work and our proxy server blocks a lot of stuff. Back in the day I used to use puTTY and ssh to my linux server on the internet and use port forwarding to setup a SSH tunnel / SOCKS connection.

Since than, my linux server is no longer an option. Therefore, I'm looking to leave my mac mini on at home and tunnel through that. I can now SSH just fine from windows into my mac-mini. I even got it so I ssh over the internet via port 21 instead of 22.

The problem: port forwarding doesn't work. I suspect it's the ssh daemon in Mac OS X.

Has anyone got this to work yet?

I have setup a SOCK5 proxy to my Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.6) system using:

ssh -p 4321 system.you.trust -D 12345

and then set my Proxy to:

Host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 12345

In your case I guess you would use -p 21 and of course the -D 12345 is whatever port you want which is greater than 1024.

And I'm sure there are some differences based on using puTTY and Windows (both of which are only things I've read about 🙂 ).

And I'm saying my server was a Mac as well (a Mac mini). The fact that I initiated the ssh from another Mac should not matter, unless there is something different between your Windows system now and when you were able to create a SOCKS proxy to a Linux server.

Exactly how you initiate an "ssh -D" command via puTTY I do not know, and where you store the Proxy Server info (or for that matter what it is suppose to look like on Windows I also do not know, but I would assume it is the same with a Mac as the destination as when it was a Linux server).

Mac OS X uses OpenSSH, the same as Linux, so I would not expect a lot of problems.

The primary assumption I'm making is that the 10.5.6 Mac mini I'm using behaves the same as the 10.6.1 Mac mini you are using. That could be the largest assumption.
