I need to block all outgoing traffic on port 8008 to a specific IP address. I have been told by the guys at the genius bar that this can be done but I can't make it happen. This is imperative to my work. I am currently being blacklisted by my web host every ten minutes because something which can't be identified on our network is probing our web hosts IP using port 8008. I know this can be done on other wireless routers but I can't find how to do it on my 802.11n Extreme. There are several advantages to the extreme and I would like to continue to use it but I can't if I can't block that port.
Can someone please help me?
Mac Pro,
Mac OS X (10.5.8),
Airport extreme 802.11n
That's completely stupid. Why on earth does apple even make a router if they are not capable of keeping it up to par with other routers on the market. I admit it has several neat features but they are useless if I can't use it. Guess I'll have to use a cheapo Netgear router. They will at least allow me to block a port if I so desire.
I agree that this is something that Apple could include but there are a lot of other manufacturers that do not offer this feature either. It is not just a matter of buying a non-Apple device and being assured of this feature. You need to pick products which do offer this feature.
You could connect the AirPort via Ethernet to the Netgear. Then configure the AirPort to act as a bridge. All the services of the AirPort will be available.
If you have all Macs on your local network, you might consider trying something like Little Snitch to find out which device(s) may be sending out requests to your Web host on this port.
You would need Little Snitch running on every Mac since Little Snitch only monitors the outgoing connections on that Mac. You can't run Little Snitch from one Mac and monitor the entire network... only that Mac.
Thanks for the help. I think I'll try to hook the airport to the netgear like you suggested. Hopefully Apple will fix this in the future. Only if enough people ask for it I guess.
I can't seem to make this work. Can someone point me to a how to this subject? Every time I set it up Airport Utility loses the AEBS and I have to full reset it to find it again.
How exactly are you setting up the AEBS? What exact settings are you using? And what is your computer connected to directly when changing these settings?
