iPhone 3G Sleep/Wake button not working

So as the subject says, the sleep/wake button is not working. I'm aware that there are other threads about this, and I have read a lot of them.

Now onto my problem:

I dropped my phone, but it has a hard cover case so it didn't suffer any damage. The only thing not working is the sleep/wake button. I have tried holding it down, holding the home button AND the sleep/wake button at the same time, and rebooting the phone. Basically, the sleep button does not register, period.

I have not tried restoring the phone, and I have heard that 99% of the time, that does not work.

The button is not stuck or loose, it still clicks perfectly fine. I have taken the iPhone apart the correct way, using a suction cup, and looked at the button. It's attached and snugged in there pretty well, but seems replaceable.

I have checked my phones warranty, and it still qualifies as "Limited Warranty".

Should I attempt to contact the mail-in part replacement service, or should I take it into an Apple store? Suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Apparantly it did suffer damage especially if this occurred immediately after the drop.

What is the correct way? I don't believe Apple provides the correct way to take an iPhone apart to the general public, and opening an iPhone yourself or via a 3rd party voids the warranty.

Accidental damage is not covered under the warranty anyway.

I think you misunderstood me..

I'm talking about the button, the outside.. Not the internals. As I mentioned, the button still CLICKS, but does not work. I was trying to relate to the old posts, about how their buttons were STUCK. Hope I cleared that up for you.

Another thing.. When I said, "the correct way", I meant the way your supposed to do it, without Apple's tools. You wouldn't want to take a screw driver, and plow it open, would you? Didn't think so.. Suction cup opens it right away, nice and easy. I've worked on other phones.

Now to the point. There is a warranty sticker, nice and brown. Opening the case has not void my warranty.. Unscrewing the board off of the case, causing me to rip the sticker would void my warranty.

I asked for suggestions/help, not your pointless trolling.

EDIT: How would they know I dropped it?

Thanks anyway.

I don't know what trolling is? Let me define it for you.

Trolling is when someone replies to your thread, having nothing related to your topic, and proceeds to reply with bs, only to annoy others.

All I asked was for help, and you automatically assumed I'm some jerk who didn't belong here. Are you having a bad day? Do you feel good about yourself, because you have a Macbook Pro and 41,300 posts? Does that make you feel powerful?

Sounds like a fat troll to me.

And in reply to "DaVBMan" -

There are 2 small screws near the iPhone's microphone, speaker, and the charge dock. As for the aceelorometer logs, I haven't looked that one up.

I appreciate your information though. I will take it to a store and see what I can do. Thanks!

I am having the same problem. I have restored my phone about 5x in the last week. Is there still no solution?

It seems that we will need to send our phone's in for repair. If your phone is jail broken, there is an application that will allow you to put your phone into the "Sleep" mode. I will not go into details in this forum, as its probably against the rules.

I hope your able to fix it!

You must have a very low opinion of yourself, which is your problem since I assumed nothing of the kind, but if the shoe fits.

And if my reply does not relate to your topic and what you included with your post, you also have a reading comprehension problem, but your suction cup skills are top notch. Providing what you don't want to hear is not the same thing as trolling you twit.

Alright, lets just stop here man. I don't feel like arguing with someone I don't know, especially over the Internet. I appreciate you replying to my thread, but it's gone a bit far now. Just please keep in mind that this is a SUPPORT forum, and all I wanted was a suggestion or help on my problem. Seeing that wasn't provided by you, annoyed me. Don't take this thread personal, and I hope you have a nice rest of the day =]

The only way I have been able to get by is by turning off the lock and leaving the home screen up all day. That and playing music, I can do that in sleep mode and it doesnt turn off. So I guess I'll take it to apple. Not sure about the jb thing.

Well.. If your sleep/wake button is broke, you should still be able to auto lock the phone after 1 minute (in the Settings menu). To unlock it, just press the home button and slide your finger across when it prompts you to. Otherwise, I might have misunderstood your problem. Hope that helps!

Fair enough.

For future reference when a problem develops with an iPhone under warranty that cannot be resolved by any of the standard troubleshooting steps, you shouldn't open the iPhone yourself or allow a 3rd party to do it.

You can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

Thank you for being understanding, Allan. And I agree with you, I shouldn't have opened it up myself. However, I have an opening job for me at an AT&T store for repairing phones, and I figured I might as well be the curious person I am!

Again, thank you for your time.
