Best portable hard drive

Hi all,

I have a huge DVD movie collection and I'd like to have easy access in playing them on my MBP.
I've seen several portable drives out there with 500GB capacity for about $100.

Ideally, I'd like to maximize drive capacity, reliability, access speed with low cost.
Recommendations? Thanks.

I use the Western Digital Passport drives. They have a specific model for Macs. Best thing is they don't require external power, just connect to USB Port and you are good to go.

Get a drive with FireWire 800, especially if you want to watch video. USB is much slower. I've been quite happy with my LaCie Rugged 500 GB drive (bus-powered, so no AC needed, and has FW800, FW400 and USB2 interfaces).

But be aware that Western Digital external drives (Passport 2.5" drives and MyBook 3.5" drives) account for about 3/4 of all the problem reports about external drives that we've seen here in the past year. I use WD drives internally without hesitation, but nothing could induce me to buy a WD external.
