"Cannot connect to itunes store" "Invalid argument"

Ever since upgrading my iPod to 3.1.1 and the new iTunes, I can connect to the iTunes store fine on my Windows PC, but cannot from the iPod. I can, however, get internet in general.

Has anyone come across this before?

I've got the same problem. My wifi is connected, but I can't get the App Store, iTunes, Safari, Stocks, Maps, Weather or any of the standard apps to work. However, I can get Air Sharing that I purchased to work fine and that uses wifi so it's not my wifi connection per se.

For iTunes and App Store I get the "cannot connect to itunes store - invalid argument" error. For Safari it just goes into "connecting" and stays like that.

I've got the most recent 3.1.1 OS on there.

Anyone got any ideas?

Having been looking at some of the other threads on this forum, I noticed that this can be caused by your router not assigning you a correct IP address.

If you go to settings -> wi-fi and tap on the little blue arrow next to your wifi network you should see a page woth IP address, subnet mask etc on it. You may need to wait a moment until an IP address appears, but when it does if it starts 169.254.x.x this is bad (it's some sort of default IP that actually means the router couldn't give you one).

In the end I just turned my router off for a minute or so, turned it back on and it worked fine (I got an IP address 192.x.x.x instead when I went to the wi-fi settings).

If this doesn't work some other people have suggested updating the firmware on your router.

i had a similar problem, usually my strategy is reboot and if it doesnt work then take it in....which i dont have to because a full reboot does work and was suggested by ppl from apple. rebooting any computer divice will allow the cpu to unclog and will restore some features that may stop working (this is origionaly a tip to get my mac working after i couldnt turn on wi-fi but it works with almost anything)

Hey everyone, I'm just confirming exactly what Sazzy 1972 said previously.

I was having the same problem as most of you -> my Ipod Touch was saying it was connected fully (three bars) but whenever I tried connecting to any application that included internet access, I could not access the internet. The App Store would say: "Could not connect - Invalid Argument" (or something like that), and I was getting really frustrated trying to get it to work, since it was telling me the connection was full.

Many forums told me to restore my Ipod, which I was relucutant to do (as my Ipod has many applications, saved information etc.), so I looked for an alternative. I checked my IP address in settings -> general -> wi-fi -> the little arrow next to my network's name, and it started with 169.254.x.x, which is what Sazzy 1972 said is bad, or an IP address stating it actually can't find an IP address (im not sure). I then tried re - scynching my Ipod, (it did nothing), pressing on the 'Renew Lease' button at the bottom of the page with my connection's IP adress (which dd nothing)... So I tried Sazzy 1972's method, and I unplugged my router for a few seconds and plugged it back in. Almost immediately, my IP address's first numbers changed to 192.x.x.x, and everything on my Ipod worked again.

I really think all of you with this problem should try this method -- and DON'T restore your Ipods!
