Creating Unique Headers and Footers on Different pages of the document?

I cannot figure out how to create different headers and footers on each page. I looked in the Help feature and did what it said but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions? Anyone else having this problem?

The idea of headers & footers is to use them for information/data that will repeat on subsequent pages. There are a couple of things you can do - create a separate section for each page & uncheck use previous headers & footers in the document inspector > section or use text boxes.

Section breaks always create a new page. If you just want to change the number of columns in different parts of a page, use layout breaks. From page 58 of the English Pages '09 manual:
Changing Headers and Footers in a Section
You can change headers and footers to be unique to a section. You can also change headers and footers within a section.
To change headers and footers:
Place the insertion point in the section. Click Inspector in the toolbar, click the Layout button, and then click Section. Deselect “Use previous headers and footers.” Type the new header or footer in the header or footer area of your document.

It seems confusing to me when dealing with the headers or footers, but you must have the cursor in the body of the document when selecting items in the inspector. Unlike other word processors I've used, Pages doesn't automatically suppress the headers & footers on the first page of a section. If you entered data in the header or footer on the first page, that will be displayed & suppressed on the remainder. To suppress it on the first page, the information must be entered on the second or later page.

Peggy,

Thanks for your reply. I've tried following the directions on p58--and have just tried it again, making sure that I have the cursor in the body of the document--and still can't get it to work. Even after I deselect "use previous headers and footers", every change I make in a header is applied to every other page. Just to clarify, is it possible to have different headers within the same section? On other threads I've looked at, some people have said this is impossible, and that you have to use text boxes for this. And yet it seems to me that p58 and you are saying it's possible. If so, it would be a great help to me for my PhD thesis, because I need to indicate in a header which subsection of each chapter is on the page below.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Paul

What version of Pages/iWork are you using? You've posted in the prior to '08 forum so I assumed you were using iWork '05 or '06. If you're using iWork '08 or '09 are you using a page layout document rather than a word processing document? In a page layout document (new to iWork '08) each page is a section so some of the options in the menus & inspectors are greyed out because they can't apply.

I'm having the same problem too and I see it was never solved or figured out, at least not on here. I just want to have my footer at the bottom of ONLY the page the footnote is on, not every freakin page. It doesn't even give you the option of editing footers or endnotes!! Oh, but it says "adding and EDITING footnotes/endnotes" in the help menu and in the user manual... The "Custom Footnote" option is also listed in the help menu, saying it's located under EDIT on the toolbar, which is not true, it doesn't even exist! This program *****, I'm really disappointed in Mac. All I'm trying to do is a simple research paper. I would really love to have my money back, because I bought iWork expecting a quality product, but all I have is a bunch of programs I won't even use. :/

Are you confusing footnotes and footers?

Footers are the running text at the bottom of pages and you can control those as parts of the sections they are in.

Neither do I understand what you are saying when you say you can not edit footnotes. You wouldn't have a footnote if you couldn't edit it. It would just be a number.

I sympathise with your struggles with Pages, I don't think it has been well designed either, although every now and then when something works in a rather clever way I feel like giving it a pat on the head. Just wish it didn't foul the carpet most of the time.
