Strange Finder and Menu Bar Behavior
I've looked all around and I can't seem to find a solution to my problem, and I mentioned it to a Genius at the Genius Bar, but he had no quick answers, so maybe someone on here may be able to help.
System: 15" 1.67MHz Powerbook G4, 1.5 GB RAM, OS X 10.4.11
Symptoms: I'm not sure if they are related, but
a) Startup seems to get hungup (wheel of death) - The menubar doesn't appear until I open a program (the dock does appear, so I can use that to open a program), desktop items do not appear until I open a program. I can not open a Finder window until I open a program.
b) "Finder" does not appear in the menubar when it is the front most program. I am still able to use Finder shortcuts to perform actions, but I can't access Finder in the menubar.
c) Finder can't be force quit/restart via Force Quit or click/holding on the Dock.
Attempted (and failed) Solutions:
1) Removed suspect Login Items
2) Restored disk permissions
3) Reinstalled OS X 10.4 from the boot disk
4) Created a new user account, it displays the same symptoms
I have no idea what the cause of this could be, short of a new harddrive/100% fresh OS install, I'm out of ideas. I'm not sure how to access the boot logs or anything via terminal, but am willing to give it a try if someone can help diagnose the problem.
