IDVD will import .avi, and then burn a dvd that you can view in your livingroom.
I tried that and it says that avi is not supported. i get a whole dialogue box that says that
Is this a divx .avi?
If so, do you have the divx codec installed?
http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
You might also check out divx doctor, which will "fix" or convert the file to a .mov which can be easily used in idvd.

Just drag the .avi file into toast in DVD Video mode. Mark chapters at 5 or 10 minute intervals (whatever you want). Press the Record button and it will convert it into a VIDEO_TS folder file and burn. This may take up to 6 or 8 hours depending on the length of the movie and your processor or CPU.
