I've just done the 3.1.2 update as well. Update ran fine, have re-enabled my 3G, will see how it goes.

My phone works fine on EDGE network until Apple solves the issue. Even had AT&T reset my phone on the network today and 3G still doesn't work.

So just disable 3G and use EDGE to have an operational phone again. Hope it helps.

um, that's what many of us have done. however, 3.1.2 just came out so hopefully this troublesome issue is behind us. i suppose we'll know for sure in the coming hours.

Installed the new OS 3.1.2 update and the new AT&T network update about an hour ago. It went very smoothly. So far it is working fine after I turned 3G back on. An hour is not long enough to know if these updates fix the issues (without introducing new ones) but an hour is longer than my iPhone would operate before without the phone/network failing to work -- so I am hopeful.

Hope others are finding that this to works for them.

iPhone also feels more responsive than with 3.1. It was very slow to respond for some things with me on 3.1 -- like pressing home button to wake up and having it pause for 5 seconds (or more) before it reacted... now it's back to what it was like previously, (almost) instant response.

Have been running 3.1.2 since the day it came out, but today ... it DID IT AGAIN.

I'm about ready to toss this freaking phone out the window. It's great at tons of things, except working as a phone. Had to do the same crap today, manual restart of the phone (followed by getting inundated with 8 text messages and a few voicemails I missed).

I know what the real iPhone killer is now. It's iPhone OS 3. I've loved the iPhones for ages but you know what? It's time for it to go. You've lost me as an iPhone customer. A phone that doesn't work == an expensive paperweight. UGGG.

I am having the same problem. Since I updated to 3.1.2 I haven't been able to make/receive calls or texts while at my office. The most annoying part is that my 3G symbol and full bars of antenna are on, and yet the functions are still failing. Periodically the bars will disappear, so I restart the phone and the same cycle happens over and over.

I thought it was an AT&T service issue, and when I called they informed me that their were no outstanding outages in the area, but they did credit me $39.99 for the inconvenience, which was very helpful of them since I am paying for a phone that doesn't work.

Apple on the other hand is impossible to get in touch with!! I have been a very loyal Apple customer for years, and have converted many people to become Apple users. I have never had any problems with their products, and until this latest update could still say that.

I would appreciate if Apple would address this issue. Many people believe that AT&T just has inferior service, and because cell phone companies are so manipulative and lock you in, many feel like they have no options. So an acknowledgement from Apple would help ease customer's minds.

PLEASE APPLE, TELL US WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR VERY EXPENSIVE PHONES THAT WE HAVE BECOME SO DEPENDENT ON! YOU CAN'T JUST MAKE GREAT SYLISH PRODUCTS, YOU HAVE TO BACK IT UP WITH SUPPORT.

Thankfully, I found a helpful temporary fix...turning off 3G under general settings. It seems to have fixed the call problem, but without 3G i can't use text.

    Sincerely,
    VERY DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER.

I'm using the firmware 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3G at the moment. I not only can't make/receive phone calls or send/receive messages, but I'm also experiencing problems with location services -- all applications which use my location crash straight after I try to load them.

I read on many threads people saying that hard reset solved the problem, others saying that turning aeroplane mode on and off made the phone work again. Also tried downgrading to firmware 3.0; not luck, which was a bit intriguing...

I've been watching my iPhone to try and build a "bug behaviour", but I couldn't find a pattern. In my case (perhaps coincidentally), it got back working when I fully charged it.

Two other friends of mine are experiencing the same problem; they both have a 3GS model though.

I reckon this is yet another firmware bug which Apple is having to deal with. Question is how long they'll be taking to release another firmware as an attempt to fix the problem. It's Apple's fault for sure.

Having said that, I thought the whole point of having a so protected phone (in terms of restrictions to third party applications and so forth) was to make sure it would be stable and reliable. Furthermore, if I were developing the firmware of a mobile phone, the first thing I would always make sure would be the actual capabilities as a phone to work properly. That is the MAIN feature of the iPhone; I would've bought an iPod Touch otherwise - cheaper and no contract to pay monthly.

"Apple on the other hand is impossible to get in touch with!!"

Have you looked at http://www.apple.com/contact/ for example? You can find that link easily on the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom of the Apple Store page, it's country-specific and there are many options for obtaining support whether technical, sales or corporate, on-line and off-line.

    Good luck!

You don't say what steps you've taken already to try to resolve your problems.

Have you 'reset network settings', have you done a 'reset' (not just power-off/power-on), have you done a 'restore' and have you done a 'restore as new'? Have you gone as far as DFU?

What you describe with the Apps sounds like a 'reset' should solve some issues for you, at least.

Complimentary phone support only exists within the first 90 days of purchase. After that you have to have applecare to talk to a person. At least that is what I am understanding from their website.

These user generated message boards offer more help than their online troubleshooting support sites. Turning the phone on and off over and over didn't solve my problem, and updating to the latest software caused it in the first place.

I just wish they would acknowledge the problem. I know lots of users that throw their hands up in the air and expect that these problems are due to shoddy AT&T service. I was right their blaming AT&T until I realized it was Apple's problem.

So far turning off 3G under general settings has solved my problem, and I misspoke when I thought it affected my ability to text, that seems to be working fine now too. How this solution will work in the long term, I don't know. I didn't pay all this money to be on the EDGE network...

"I didn't pay all this money to be on the EDGE network..."

That SHOULD be a 'carrier' issue and nothing to do with the iPhone though? If there's no 3G coverage (as is the case close to where I am) then I have to accept it (and the inconvenience of switching modes for consistency or missing out on 3G most of the time) or change carrier (and phone). My choice is 'stick' with the iPhone because its light-years ahead of the nearest competitor in so many ways and marginally less-good in only a few that are improving with each update.

As more carriers support the iPhone (now 2 in the UK and 3 early next year) then the customer may become 'King' again!

I notice that you mention turning the iPhone off and on, but have you tried a 'reset' or a 'restore'? They are options that may help.....

    Good luck!
