Since 3.1. Unable to make calls, text or go online unless I restart iPhone.

I know there have been a lot of topics on problems with OS 3.1, but I can't seem to find one similar to mine so thought I would ask.
I am a UK user and I have the 8GB iPhone 3G.

Since installing 3.1 I found a few serious problems which I didn't have before. The phone will work fine but will then encounter the following problems all at once:
- Can't make or receive calls (like there's no coverage).
- Can't send or receive texts (again like there's no coverage).
- Can't get online with 3G / Edge
- I will start an application, iphone tries to load, then goes back to home screen.

It seems the only way to to fix the issue is to turn the iphone completely off and then back on again.
Anyone know whats going on?

We had the same problem with both of our 16gb 3GS's since the 3.1 update. After over a week of problems, restores, restore as new, reset network settings, new sim cards. blah blah blah.

We exchanged our phones today, they both have 3.0.1. They both have worked flawlessly all day. So yay for us, finally our 1.5 month old 3gs's are working again, no thanks to the 3.1 update.

We had to set them up as new phones fwiw, can't restore a backup made in 3.1 onto a phone with 3.0.1 on it.

I suggest anyone out there with a iphone under warranty, just go exchange it, and of course don't upgrade to 3.1

Just keep returning the phones until you get one that works or apple fixes the issue. Clearly not all iphones have this issue, so eventually you will get one that works.

It sends a strong message to apple when they have to keep replacing phones.

well I should have kept my mouth shut, iphone #5 is doing it now. So of our two most recent replacement phones (5&6) the one we updated from 3.0.1 to 3.1 has started acting up 1 day after we updated it. The factory installed iphone (6) with 3.1 has worked flawlessly.

Tier 2 has submitted an engineering ticket. I called them from #6 when #5 was acting up and they called AT&T to check the network, apple of course assumes this is an at&t issue. After at&t told apple straight out that there is no problems with our local tower and that the phone says it's connected correctly, he said this is NOT an issue we can help you with.

For me this confirms this is an apple issue (but we all knew that anyways). He said it can take 4 days to get an answer. They extracted through itunes as much info from the phone and info from the computer itself.

Clearly something is wrong with how 3.1 installs over 3.0/.1 for us. Lets hope apple can figure out why. Otherwise it will be yet another replacement, but this time I will assist on it coming factory installed with 3.1

Keep us posted. I starting to question if I should call AT&T and ask to return both our 2 month old iphones. Maybe not cancel our contract, but I want a refund and be eligible for the instant discount needed to get 2 new not apple phones. Blackberries always treated us well, so did WM.

I already posted this in the "Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update" thread, but I'm experiencing this same problem moreso than the random shutdowns:

My phone loses its carrier signal somehow. It will appear to be normal, but won't receive any calls/texts, can't make any outgoing calls/texts, and can't connect to the internet despite the screen showing full signal strength and the "3G" icon being present in the top left corner. If I try to send a text or make a call, I usually get a "can't connect to cellular network" message.
The only thing I can do at that point is shut down the phone & restart it. It happens several times a day, and I've missed several incoming calls because my phone can't or won't receive them.

Phone: 3G 16gb
Push: off
Wifi: off
Location services: off
3G: on

I hope Apple has acknowledged the issues people are having, because there's not much of a point in owning a cell phone that can't make or receive calls.

Add me to the growing list of unhappy (to put it mildly) iPHONE users. Since 3.1 phone locks up as do all of yours. No text in or out, no calls in or out, no mail in or out, no nothing.
Tried APPLE support..... hmmm, no way to contact them except arrange call. WAKE UP Apple, if the phone is locked up, do I call???? Will make ANOTHER 30 mile trip to Apple store to be told, restart it, we know there is a problem and we're working on it, you're doing something wrong, yada yada yada.
Between terrible ATT service and useless iPHONE I regret ever buying this thing.....

I am having similar problems here in South Africa on Vodacom's network.

My phone will appear to have good signal strength, but calls often go directly to voicemail without the phone ringing, and I often don't receive SMS messages. Had a few dropped calls and I struggle at times to make calls. All this since I 'upgraded' to iPhone OS 3.1.

Haven't seen any improvement in battery life, either (it actually seems worse).

Same problem with 3GS. Phone will not send/receive calls or texts. I get a network error message "Failed to connect. Please check that airplane mode is off" (It is). That means I can't browse or use any app that needs a data network. To get the phone operable, I have to restart the phone. Then the problem reappears in a few hours.

This all started when I "upgraded" to 3.1. Last weekend I restored my iPhone to factory settings via iTunes. That did not solve the problem. Other threads suggest a new SIM card will solve the problem, so I guess I'll pay ATT a visit.

I'm pretty amazed that a software update could affect the hardware! Given all the problems Apple causes through these "upgrades", I'm amazed that people still like their products. Right now, I'm regretting my decision to leave my former carrier for the buggy iPhone.

Since 3.1. Unable to make calls, text or go online unless I restart iPhone.
