Q: iTunes 9 Starts Automatically

Since installing iTunes 9 the application keeps starting automatically on Start-up. Even if I then close the application, then it starts-up again later, and sometimes even plays a song of its own will.

Any ideas what may be causing this and advice how to stop it?

Wild. Mine started doing it today. Turned off all the device remote stuff as in the previous post. Mine doesn't seem to care about whether there was a backup or not. Just restarts, sometimes plays a song, and sometimes, like just now, stops playing the song. Wild man!

Just turned off IR remote, and it still came back on. Just a wild question, are you using facebook and safari? It seems to act up when I'm using that.

OK, not facebook related. I did have it come on again today right as I started Numbers in iWork. Anyone else seeing that? Also just turned off "search for shared libraries" Maybe that will exorcise it.

Just started happening to me a couple of days ago. Additionally, if I tried to play something, after a few seconds it would pause automatically!

I went to my second login account and everything was fine, so it was account related.

So I went to Library/Preferences and deleted all preference files with "iTunes" as part of the name. There were five such files! Now everything seems to be fine.

It was fixed yesterday, but unfixed this morning. Looks like some interaction with Safari or Better Touch Tool

Stopped it (yet again!) by going into the Bluetooth preference pane, unchecking everything but the mouse and keyboard I use and removing entries for older bluetooth devices that I'm not using.

Wierd stuff man. I killed off the unused bluetooth devices. Found using a bonjour browser on my iphone that itunes home sharing was on. Turned that off and closed itunes. It opened again by itself. Hopefully a reboot will do the trick.

OK, this is some seriously weird stuff. Still doing it.... Remote disable, sharing off, home sharing off, no extra bluetooth stuff. Using direct wired USB keyboard...

I know this is not the exact problem that most of you are having but it may help somebody:
After upgrading to Snow Leopard, iTunes would startup as soon as I would quit it, the only thing that would keep it down was a force quit. I found the culprit to be a little app I use to rate songs called "I Love Stars" (Very handy app by the way). The problem was I hadn't updated it in a while.

    Good input. Got me thinking....

I went to users, login items, and killed itunes helper. Then rebooted. We'll see. So far, so good.

I'm suspicious that something in Snow Leopard is causing helper to give launch commands to iTunes. Not a lot of other things running that already have code in them to send invocations to itunes, so it stands to reason.

Just fixed it on my Mac. Right (double tap) click iTunes in the Dock, select "Settings" and deselect "Start on login" (or something like that. I'm on a Danish MacOS).

Anyway it did the trick for me. Hope it will help others too.

I am have maybe the same maybe a similar problem. When I have iTunes open, for example maybe when charging my iPod, it opens a playlist and starts playing music. Not right away, but after a few minutes. Then, while I'm in another application, for example, typing this, the music stops and starts continually, seemingly responding to the keyboard, but I can't figure out how to stop it responding to the keyboard. If I WANT iTunes playing music, it does the same thing, turns on and off as I'm typing in another application. If anyone has any ideas how to stop it, I will be very grateful as this is driving me mad. Thanks!

The starting and stopping was one of my symptoms that I finally got rid of removing unused bluetooth devices (see my earlier post). But it seems to be multiple possible causes so best to try everything shown here!

If it's with snow leopard, go to system preferences, accounts, login items, and take out itunes helper. Reboot. That will do it. I have turned back on library sharing, remote, etc. That was the culprit. The only catch is that now you'll have to manually start itunes when you plug in an iPod. If you don't have snow leopard, that may not be it. I've not had the issue with Tiger, Panther, nor Leopard.
