Feb 24, 2010 7:08 PM in response to WHNby Warren Mcbride,All I can tell you is to read the thread. There seems to be at least more than one reason. Mine was the external speakers, others seem to have other "fixes". Good luck. -
Feb 25, 2010 2:40 PM in response to Paul Keeton1by butre,My mac book pro started to have this problem just half an hour ago.
I think it can be Time Machine because it is the only application i launched in the last hour and that i had never launched before. Soon back will be completed and so i can check if my suspects are right. -
Feb 25, 2010 3:10 PM in response to Paul Keeton1by butre,Since Time Machine finished the back up the problem seemed to be solved.
When Time Machine started again the problem was still there, so in my case iTunes starts automatically when Time Machine starts backup on my external usb drive. -
Mar 22, 2010 4:28 PM in response to butreby Lisa2010,Hi all,
I finally took my MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar... the Genius couldn't figure out the problem with iTunes, but in trying to sort out another problem--that the MBP wouldn't go to sleep reliably--he ran some kind of diagnostic and found 2 bugs in the operating system code. He fixed those, and both the sleeping (not sleeping!) problem and the iTunes problem were gone!
That was a couple, maybe 3 weeks ago, and it's been running perfectly ever since. I meant to log on and say so, but somehow three weeks drifted past... Anyway, all is well here now. -
Mar 22, 2010 4:30 PM in response to Lisa2010by Lisa2010,And sorry, I hit post too fast, I meant to add, thanks for all the advice I received. I tried everything and was glad to have exhausted all these possibilities first before trying to explain myself at the Genius Bar. Thanks! -
Mar 22, 2010 6:09 PM in response to Warren Mcbrideby Ginkgoman,I tried everything that was suggested in the forum without success until I went to Preferences/Accounts/Login Items. iTunesHelper was checked! Unchecking this solved the problem. I hope this helps someone. -

Apr 8, 2010 10:44 AM in response to Ginkgomanby PJMF,This occurs whenever I send an email or a Skype message. Going on since Snow Leopard. I do not have iTunesHelper set in Login Items. It plays a podcast which continues through a Skype call. -
Apr 23, 2010 9:03 AM in response to PJMFby illiosentis,I have tried all of the previously mentioned "cures", but none of them work for more than a single day.
A "priveleges" problem has also arisen on my mac that can't be corrected by the disk doctor program. Is it possible that my itunes problem is somehow linked to a bigger system problem?
Thanks -

I had this problem before and seemed to fix it. Then it started again, early in the week. I use external speakers and took your advice about touching the speaker plug and voila, a bunch of static noise and itunes started. Removed the speaker plug into the Mac and plugged back in to the Mac, itunes started. We will see what happens from here. I feel like this will fix the problem for me. Thanks for posting! -
Apr 30, 2010 11:22 PM in response to f0rgivenby chinmaybhalke, got it right by doing a "repair permissions". Hopefully it will work. -
May 3, 2010 5:53 AM in response to chinmaybhalkeby chinmaybhalke, noop . its come back like a ghost .... haunting. -
May 5, 2010 9:00 AM in response to chinmaybhalkeby PJMF,I mentioned above that this occurs whenever I send anything over Skype or email. I use headphones (Plantronics SP 500) for Skype calls; normally they are plugged into the USB socket and left sitting on the desk.
I have now plugged out the headphones and the problem has not recurred.
Note that the proximate cause was the sending or receiving of a message; the condition precedent was having headphones plugged in. Now just to find a way to sneak back the headphones without iTunes noticing.
I just wonder...... when an e mail goes out or a Skype message arrives a sound is sent to the speakers/headphones. So now the proximate cause is linked back to the condition precedent. But where does that get me? -
Aug 26, 2010 12:17 PM in response to PJMFby bookitinc,my itunes began starting automatically a few days ago, on an iMac I have had for several months. I had it hooked up to my stereo to use its external speakers. I unplugged the connection to the external output. When I plugged it back in again, I started to get a hum in one of the speakers, and iTunes started up on my computer.
When I fiddled with the jack going into the external speaker output, I was able to start and stop iTunes playing, together with a crackling sound out of my speakers as I inserted or withdrew the jack.
I am unable to reconnect to my stereo now without that humming sound in the speaker, even when I swap out the cables for a new set.
I believe this to be bug in iTunes, or the latest version of the operating system.
