Why can't i log into anything?

I am able to access the internet through my Emac. I am using Safari web browser, i also tried using Mozilla Firefox. I can view websites but anything that requires me to use a password or log-in it will just time out and not even attempt to open the page. Ive tried hotmail, my online banking and my mobile phone etc. Tried changing proxie settings and reducing security but no luck. Is there a web browser that enables me to log in and visit these websites? Any advice...Please? You may e-mail me as im using someone else's computer in the meantime. Although my e-mac is only 2 days old.

If you're behind a firewall and trying to access secure websites, the firewall may be blocking access on port 443. You can open port 443 on the built-in Mac OS X firewall from the Sharing pane of System Preferences; if you're behind a router, it may have its own firewall. To open a port on the router's firewall, consult the router's documentation. Some ISPs, businesses, and educational institutions block certain ports.
