What model G3 (iBook G3) & how much RAM currently? Maxing out the RAM usually will make it faster.

The Max RAM on the Beige g3's (all models) -- despite ambiguous Apple documents -- is 3*256 MB DIMMs, but they must be just the right DIMMs. If you have to buy more, get RAM for The Blue & White G3, as it is rated slightly faster, but is identical in every other parameter. The module height on the MiniTower should be no problem -- the desktop model has a height limit.

With your help, I've got the right model specs in front of me:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook_500.html

From the System Profiler: I see a 64 MB DIMMO Built In
plus a 128 MB SDRAM DIMMI/J12.

Based on what you have written, I'm guessing I'm looking at replacing the 128 MB module with something larger.

If so, seems pretty straightforward.
