Since updating my 3G to 3.1 I am getting massive battery charge reduction. I can't get through a whole day now without the 20% warning kicking in around the late afternoon/early evening. If I didn't charge by then it'd be dead by the end of the day. Prior to 3.1 that was never a problem - Something weird is going on.... Anyone else had this?
iMac 24", 4GB, 1TB,
Mac OS X (10.6.1),
Additional 20" Display
I had the same problem with my iphone 3G 16GB White.
In the beginning I thought the problem was because I started to use push notification, but now I turned it off and still have the same problem. The battery life is about goes form 6 to 8 hours.
Everything is off (3g, gps, bluetooth) except for wifi. Now I'm quite sure that the problem began with 3.1 upgrade.
If you have MMS on try turning it off. I have the same issue but have noticed since early this morning after my charge (with MMS off) the battery meter doesn't appear to have moved.

My phone will hasn't had a random shut down. My batter problems works like this. I can go a whole day with the normal use, some calls and some games and the battery icon will still show full. I even plug it in to charge before shutting down my computer to go sleep.
In the morning my iPhone shows a full battery charge but the web browser won't connect to anything. I have full bars and 3G icon but it just wont connect. I do a reboot and once it comes back online I have the 20% battery warning. From full to 20% in one reboot.
Apple Needs to do something!! Ever since the software upgrade my battery life has been terrible. I was sitting at my computer today with my phone synced and for an hour my phone read the same half power. My computer won't even charge the phone - just keep it from losing power! I had to plug in to the 110 outlet just to get it to charge.
I have had a drastic decline in Battery performance 32gig 3gs. I can not make a full 8hrs with medium use anymore since update. I have a 3g also which was not affected by the 3.1 update??? Restore as new did not fix!!!
🙂 I downgrad my iphone 3G from 3.1 to 3.0.1 and everything works perfect. 3 days batterylife , while not using the phone - perfekt!
It´s very easy to downgrad - use google (QuickPwn) - but you will lose every data in the apps and all other modulations because you are not able to use the backup wich OS 3.1 made.
Add me to the "Me, too! Me, too!" list of current iphone 3g battery life haters. I thought maybe it was the battery so I replaced it and I still don't get a full days charge out of it. Given that I am in IT and need the phone to say, be able to receive an SMS message while I sleep, this development is particularly disconcerting. Please, apple, fix battery life on our phones by figuring out what in 3.1 is killing us!
Frustrated (and now out cash for battery fix that didn't change anything!)
i too upgraded to 3.1 and only noticed the issues recently when my iPhone died during the night on two nights running. i use it as a Clock at night (night stand app) charging in a dock and in airplane mode. the app stops the phone shutting down (i.e. its always on) and it looks as though despite showing its charging the battery drains away through the night, i stress again, even in airplane mode! - i have checked the dock and its not that - my Touch, running the same app on vs 2.? OS is still fine and runs as it should.
it must be 3.1 that's done it - so annoying as when its working the phone is a joy to own

Has any tried the latest update to iphone? If so has it fix things?
From what I've been able to determine, 3.1.2 has not fixed the short battery life problem. But many have also stated that it's too early to tell so I would wait it out for a couple of weeks and just monitor the activity; that's what I'm doing.
Well, here's one more confusing piece of info on this topic. As of this morning (knock on wood) my phone's battery drain stopped. Seemingly by magic. I haven't upgraded to 3.1.2 yet, and after this whole experience I probably won't right away. I came on to the boards here to see if anyone else had had this experience.
The only changes I made were to start letting the battery drain out all the way before recharging. I think I read another person on here suggest it. I did that a few times, which given how fast it was draining was about one day, and then turned the phone off and plugged it in to recharge overnight. Today, it seems back to normal.
I'm not saying that is what did it, but that was my experience. I didn't have any of the crashing or overheating problems, but I did have the battery drain and a very slow and poorly operating SMS/MMS. I didn't do any exotic solutions other than what I described above. Maybe it was luck or coincidence, but I'm hoping it stays this way. (fingers crossed)
