Just following up on my recent post - a clean restore and reloading as a new phone may seem like a pain, but it really works! And it's better than suffering with a near useless phone or dealing with AppleCare/Genius Bar etc.

    Just an update -

I reset the phone, restarted the phone, and turned off the bluetooth. All seems back to normal. While I always had bluetooth on the Jawbone (also no longer holding a charge), it was not paired over night. Restarting the phone fixed my dropped call issue and turning off the bluetooth fixed my super draining battery issue. Weird how it started acting differently even though my usage didn't change.

I am experiencing almost exactly the same thing as Greg Mihran. My only exception so far is that I have not yet got my iPhone shutdown on me randomly for no reasons. Aside from that, I am experiencing worse than drastic decrease in battery life. A single full charge with a fairly heavy use using 3G, monitoring one Exchange email and calendar account as well as 3 other mail accounts (Gmail and Yahoo), I was still able to get between 1.5 to 2 full days. Since upgrading to firmware 3.1, leaving the iPhone in standby and simply not touching it at all, I get 4 or 5 hours before the battery is completely depleted. If I use my iPhone in the slightest manner, I get 2 hours on a full charge before the device dies on me.

Apple has unfortunately dropped the ball on this one and should at least push back the previous firmware back to users while they fix 3.1.

Stephane, see my new post on this Board, "Turn Off 3G While Waiting for iPhone 3.1.1 Update" ... This ONE change has returned my iPhone to a normal working state, especially the battery life. This will allow us to have "reasonable" iPhone performance (albeit EDGE) while Apple resolves the issue (which hopefully won't take too long). Greg

There is a serious and confirmed battery life issue after updating to 3.1. If you visit the 3GS forums you'll see 78 pages of posts concerning battery life. The post is "iphone 3gs with fw 3.1-battery life gets even worse." It started on 9/1 and continues through today. Every conceivable fix that people have done has not remedied the problem. Some people claim that a reset, a clean install or cycling the battery charge differently has fixed the problem for them. That may be the case. Apple has not disclosed any information about the battery problem, but they have sent selected users a battery logging program for their phones. I have a 3g and as soon as I updated I noticed my battery life had dropped by about 40%. Before the update I had Bluetooth and WiFi enabled. I do not use push notifications so I check my email manually. Previous to the update I was able to use email, access the Internet several several times a day, text and use the phone. By the end of the day I would still have about 20% battery life left. I have had to cut my usage of the phone by approximately 50% or risk having it die on me. So far today I have used only the phone for 2 hours and 35 minutes and am under 40% battery life. I hope Apple is able to address this problem and get it solved as quickly as possible. What good is an iPhone if you can only use it as a phone without buying a Morphie Juice pack for additional battery time?

It's not a normal working state if you have to disable a feature as important as 3g. I use the Internet on my phone daily and Edge is not an alternative. In some posts on the 3gs forums there are suggestions to turn off everything but the phone! Apple needs to acknowledge the problem publicly and attempt to give a time frame as to when this issue is going to be fixed.

You get through a whole afternoon? If I didn't have chargers everywhere I'd be lost. The last iTunes update has wreaked havoc with receiving and sending emails as well.

Posted on 3gs discussion board 10/01

I have a 3g and battery life complaints are increasing on that discussion board. I think we need to pick one day next week and have everyone that's experiencing battery drain problems visit their local Apple store. There were lines out the door to buy the phones, let's put lines out the door to get Apple to acknowledge and fix the problem. I am incredulous that Apple knows there's a serious problem with the 3.1 release but will not even acknowledge it. Oops, that would stop iPhone sales the day they announced it. They remind me of the American car companies 20 years ago. Ship new cars with a known problem and issue a service bulletin to the car dealers so they can fix it.

If you read my post from 1:16 today, you'll see I mention that. 3gs users have tried everything you can possibly imagine. The only problem is when someone reports a fix and others follow the exact directions, it can't be replicated to any extent. If Apple had the solution, they would have issued an update by know.

I´ve the same problems. Yesterday it took 4 and a half hour and my battery was empty. I think it could be a problem with the 3G/edge. The phone takes 20 % batterylife within a hour without doing anything with the phone. At home in WiFi it does not use battery life without doing anything with the phone.

Is it possible to downgrad to os 3.0. There was everything perfect.

On last statement. First of all I love my iphone, but I´m a PC user and I heard in the past, apple is so easy to use. But I have to say, I had never such as problems with a Windows PC as I have now with the iphone. There are allways massive problems with every update!

    Apple please help!

I have the same problems since I updated my iphone 3G to firmware 3.1.

Battery problems, WLAN problems, sometimes mail problems, it doesn´t connect to mobileme - when i do a restart, then it will work. Even so black screens and nothing is working anymore. I must restart the iphone (press home and start buttom.)After that, it works. This morning I had a new proplem, I press the start buttom and then the screen shows the apple logo...5 minutes later the apple logo is not away, no, it was the same picture..ok, again a restart and after that it works but not all apps will working now
Please Apple, let us have a new Firmware or give us the 3.0 back, as fast as you can.

I have an appointment with Apple Tech. this Sunday so will let you know if my battery issue is resolved. From this exp. I am not going to upgrade any iphone firmware once its resolved. BTW how to do clean reset? Will everything be lost and reinstalled? And does it really work?

I have been having the same problem, since the update battery life is really poor. I generally play a bit of monopoly on the way to work, and listen to music, but before the update it would generally last a day, sometimes into the next morning. Now my 40 min trip to work seems to have the battery at 40%!

No bluetooth on and no wifi, anyone know whats going on? Feel like I have to walk with a charger!
