Determining audio volume taking a long time

I have a long radio show that I record import onto my ipod. I'm noticing that iTunes9 is taking a very long time to determine audio volume as compared to previous versions.

Any suggestions for fixing this? Is there a way to bypass audio determination? When I manually quit it out it sometimes removes the files from my library.

I spent 45 minutes on phone with Apple support to help them to figure out what causes iTunes 9 to say it is "Determining Audio Volume", and even after he consulted with others there he still had no idea why it was doing that. (I did not have the "Sound Check" option on, so that wasn't the cause. We verified that setting in both iTunes and on my iPhone.)

The files it is doing this with are only the files on the iPhone itself.

Has anyone at Apple cared about this problem? I see that someone has talked to Tech support without any positive result. Is there a library preference for this kind of thing. I only added 200 new songs and it took 40 minutes to adjust volume without that option checked. I can not restart iTunes without it wanting to check the volumes again. I will have to use another app for listening to music and this totally changed my mind about getting an iPhone. I love music, but I hate this crap with iTunes.

I had the same problem, but I think I've found a cure.

Even though Sound Check was disabled in preferences, iTunes would insist on Determining Audio Volume everytime it was launched. But there is also a 'Sound Check' preference in the Burn CD dialogue.

To turn it off you need to select a playlist, hit the Burn Disc button (bottom left) select Audio CD as the disc format and un-check 'Use Sound check'

Then you must hit the 'Burn' button (if you don't it will not remember the new settings) You can then cancel the burn by clicking the X in the itunes player window.

This has cured the problem for me

Hello. I am also very frustrated with this problem. I'm trying to load some audiobooks. It is still trying to determine the volume of one chapter of this specific book. I can't even delete this chapter. In fact, I can't even try your solution because iTunes just freezes completely as soon as I hit a key.

Is there some way that I can reload iTunes to get it working again? Re-booting just doesn't help. Neither does multiple re-bootings. I'm almost at an actual booting point.
